"I was lucky to catch this film at a discount theatre six years ago. It vanished from the marquee in a blink. When I think of trully powerful movies, I keep coming back to this one. It has a star studded cast and with good reason. It is raw and real to the bone. Kevin Spacey portrays Quoyle, a product of a bullying father. He allows his life to be shaped by others. He is haunted by a past that he has no connection with. The pieces of the puzzle begin to come together when his father dies and his Aunt Agnis (Judy Dench) arrives. He finds himself moving to Newfoundland and slowly unlocking the mysteries of his past.The panoramic cinema inThe Shipping News make you feel like you have lived and loved in Newfoundland. The humor and the triumph of this film give you respect for the indomitable human spirit. Ultimately this movie is about healing.It is a MUST SEE.
