Directed by Wes Craven.
Wes Craven's first film was a crude but shocking horror opus that, like George A. Romero's Night of the Living Dead (1968), became a grind house hit largely because it went much further than terror films before it had been willing to go. Often compared to Ingmar Bergman's stark medieval rape drama The Virgin Spring (1960) (though one wonders whether this was influence or just coincidence), Last House on the Left follows a group of teenage girls heading into the city when they hook up with a gang of drug-addled ne'er-do-wells and are brutally murdered. The killers find their way to the home of one of their victim's parents, where both father and mother exact a horrible revenge. Like Tobe Hooper's The Texas Chainsaw Massacre two years later, Last House on the Left was an unrelievedly dark vision of contemporary horror that inspired many future films which copied its effects without achieving its visceral impact. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

"How About lead murderer in Last House on the Left (2008), "Krug". Also Last house on the left was Wes Cravens first horror movie. Krug was the inspiration behind another well know horror icon, "Freddy Kruger". " [More]

"I think you guys missed the point of my earlier post... There actually IS a subgenre of 'film' (I will not use the word 'movie' here) which is correctly identified as 'torture-porn' . I have a few of these in my collection, and NONE of the 'mainstream' movies you have mentioned above even remotely come close to qualifying for this title! I'm quite certain that a few people in this group are at least familiar with this type of movie but are afraid to say anything... So, yeah, calling movies like 'Hostel' , etc. 'torture-porn' is completely wrong and misleading... About the only semi-mainstream movie I can think of that even comes close would be Last House On The Left ... But even that is not a true 'torture-porn'... In another discussion I talked about Joe D'Amato's Buried Alive ... that one comes close as well, but it is still not quite the real deal... you will know 'torture-porn' whe ... " [More]

"I was 19 years old during the period of late '79- early 1980. And it is during that time that I wandered into a seedy, downtown Denver 'movie-house'. The only thing I knew about the movie I was about to see was the name on the marquee... "ZOMBIE"... I was STUNNED! This Movie Was PHENOMENAL! Up to this point, the 'goriest' movies I had ever seen would be "Night Of The Living Dead" and "The Exorcist" ... (I had not yet seen "Dawn Of The Dead" which was released the year before...) ... and some B-movie Drive-In fare like "Last House On The Left" and "The Toolbox Murders" and "Driller Killer" and "The Drive-In Massacre" and, of course, "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" ... This movie (for me, at the time) outdid them ALL! From the FANTASTIC 'comic book' story line to the AMAZING, 'in your face'', "GORE FX"! ( "excuse me, Miss.. ... " [More]

"It could be worse, Dr_Gor. At least you don't live in a scaredy cat country where the censors cut a lot of great horror movies, like mine. I'm not saying that I hate England for it, I'm just saying that we leave movies today uncut when they're even worse than films like Anthropopagus, Evil Dead, and Last House on the Left. I think it's because in the 80s we saw a sudden rush of gorefest horror movies and some protestor, unfortunately, went to the censors about this and they banned a lot of movies. Some are still either cut or banned today! Heck, I can't even find Anthropopagus anywhere! " [More]

"P.S. I could not find this movie listed on SPOUT by any of the titles that I know but you CAN find it on IMDB... The 'uncut' version that I have is on VHS and I bought it from a 'VHS-bootlegger' in the early 1990's. WARNING: There are SEVERAL versions which claim to be 'uncut' but aren't! It took me three tries to finally get the COMPLETELY 'uncut' version! Perhaps I can persuade Froggy to put in her two cents worth on this movie... " [More]

"I've never been scared, or disgusted, by any horror movie. Last House isn't scary, but will leave you feeling sick even if you only see the cut version. In England, the uncut version is banned...Thank God!I had my dad rent this out for me from my first visit to Blockbuster. We both watched it. I thought it was appauling what happened in the film. Beatings, rapes, torturing, killings, chainsawings, suicides, shootings, and even castrations! It's definately worth a look, but not for the faint-hearted! " [More]

"... Ah, the 'Drive-In'.... (sigh..)... Back 'in the day' there were more than a DOZEN Drive-Ins in and around Denver! Now I think there is ONLY ONE left in the entire STATE! And, FORTUNATELY, it is NOT FAR from where I live! Although I have not been in quite some time! They just don't show the 'cool' movies like they USED TO! My Dad was a HUGE movie freak and started taking me to the Drive- In when I was 5 or younger! ... Sometimes the whole family would go, and sometimes it was just me and him! There was one in town called 'The Lakeshore Drive-In' because it was next to 'Sloan's Lake' ... I almost cried when they tore that down! (more on this in a minute...)... One time, they had a 'marathon' showing of all 5 (!) "Planet Of The Apes" movies and just me and my Dad went... and we stayed till the END! And I stayed AWAKE!!! We ate pizza and he drank beer and I drank pop all night long! We got home about ... " [More]

Horror master Wes Craven's powerful debut was this controversial low-budget remake of Ingmar Bergman's The Virgin Spring (1959). One of the more brutal rape-revenge films, it is unflinchingly explicit in its depiction of the vicious abuse and slaughter of two teenage girls at the hands of a Mansonesque gang of criminals. The revenge segments are no less shocking, including a murder by bucksaw, a throat slashing, and an oral castration. The acting is amateurish and the cinematography is bargain-basement, but something in the almost documentary-like nature of the film makes it devastating nonetheless. Along with Night of the Living Dead (1968) and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974), it is one of the early classics of graphic horror. ~ Robert Firsching, All Movie Guide
