Directed by Alejandro Amenábar.
Spanish filmmaker Alejandro Amenabar's first English-language production is a creepy period ghost story that continues in the vein of his earlier art house hit Open Your Eyes (1997). Nicole Kidman stars as Grace, a devoutly religious mother of two ailing children who has moved with her family to a mansion on the English coast while awaiting her husband's return from World War II, though he has been declared missing. Their children, Anne (Alakina Mann) and Nicholas (James Bentley), both suffer from a rare photosensitivity disease that renders them extremely vulnerable to sunlight, prompting Grace's rule of having only one door open in the house at a time. When Anne begins claiming to see ghosts, Grace at first believes her newly arrived family of eccentric servants to be responsible, but chilling events and visions soon lead her to believe that something supernatural is indeed going on. The Others was released only a few months prior to Vanilla Sky (2001), the American remake of Alejandro's Open Your Eyes (1997), ironically starring Kidman's then-estranged husband Tom Cruise. ~ Karl Williams, All Movie Guide

TheWorkingDeadTheWorkingDead Re:Screams in the Movie Theater

"Well, I'm usually pretty good at not screaming in theatres, so I can actually only think of one instance(although a few more have gotten to me at home). It was during The Others, which I was actually reminded of several times when watching The Orphanage(I also thought about Poltergeist a lot, does anyone else see the similarities?). The one true 'scream inducing' moment in The Others, when the kids are hiding in the closet. I had my feet up on the seat in front of me, and I actually screamed and recoiled. But the theatre was empty, with only my brother and a couple a few rows ahead of us, so my scream was wasted. " [More]

"There are so many writers in the world who make little or no money and yet someone was able to sell this piece of shit. Amazing. Nothing is more disheartening or frustrating than seeing the ending coming before the movie has barely begun. " [More]

""The Others- Even though I didn't love the movie, that doesn't take away from the fact that I had no clue that that would be the ending" Me too,i had no clue how that movie was going to end the first time i saw it;It gave new meaning to the title of th movie The Others; It was the first movie that i saw that had a ending like that;I would say the ending was quite original.this may contain spoilers for American Psycho;sorry, for those who have not seen it.How about the movie American Psycho(2000)? I love that movie. When this movie first came out, i saw this flick repeatedly, I always concluded that he(patrick) killed all those people. But, during a recent viewing of this flick last wk.,i changed my mind about the conclusion of the film. Now i believe,(through a much closer look of the film)that his killing spree was completely imaginary.I suppose i saw many little hints that made the killings look imaginary.I believe his imagination started right before he killed his first vic ... "Here is were we will discuss the films with the endings that suprised us the most. Think back at those films that knocked us right off of our "Pre-determined cliche" chair. Why did the ending suprise us so much? I'll list a few to start it off.Three Extremes- Im talking about the "Dumplings" story. EwwwwwThe Others- Even though I didn't love the movie, that doesn't take away from the fact that I had no clue that that would be the ending.Sixth Sense- This was very well played and the ending suprised everyone so much that they all watched it again. The Wizard of Oz- I loved this film and the ending was perfect and I bet it suprised you the first time you saw it.Mulholland Dr- I know the entire movie was one suprise after another, but after the film was over and you actually thought about it's randomness, don't tell me it didn't suprise you.Now it's your turn! "Caught this one on Sundance the other afternoon after work purely by chance. I'm not a very big 'horror' fan, and I'm sure this would disappoint the 'blood and guts' crowd. I like a movie that can get under your skin with a suggestion of terror rather than the full fledged hatchet to the forehead. Creepy and atmospheric, with some great soundtrack music and sound effects which squeezes a lot of mileage out of a drippy spot on the ceiling and a child's little red plastic purse. I haven't seen the remake that came out this past summer, but I heard it was pretty soggy (don't you love movies that write their own reviews? - "all wet", "all washed up", "limp as a wet dishrag"). Other recommendations of good creepy psychological thrillers: Repulsion, The Others, Eraserhead, The Haunting, Rosemary's Baby " [More]

"I rented The Others from Netflix this weekend and was a little confused at why the film was so highly rated there. Nicole Kidman plays a conservative widow who is responsible for raising two kids with a rare condition that makes them alergic to light. The movie does a good job of exploring the supernatural realm and a few of the twists and turns are delightfully unexpected, but overall the film is very slow, boring and lacks the chemistry necessary to keep a viewer engaged for two hours. Part horror movie, part psychological thriller, but all PG13. The movie had all the appeal of a traditional thriller without the body count. " [More]

Alejandro Amenabar's taut, highly effective thriller is such a refreshment simply because it delights in creating an old-fashioned set of rules for the viewer to go along with, and it results in a picture as noteworthy as The Sixth Sense in toying with viewer expectation and providing non-gratuitous scares that are genuinely earned. A rare movie that honestly deserves comparison with Alfred Hitchcock's sterling oeuvre, the film is helped out considerably by its focused, excellent performances, especially embodied in Nicole Kidman's magnificent turn as an icy, high-strung mother caught up in a maelstrom of frayed nerves. Kidman often seems miscast in certain movies, but here she marvelously conveys the character's nervous curiosity and provides a sturdy audience surrogate so that the film never seems too out of reach. The performances by the young cast are also superb, and Fionnula Flanagan registers strongly as the house's nanny. Surprising, narratively sound and armed with believable suspense, The Others proves that the haunted house genre need not be overwrought CGI and dated spooks in order to work. This is Amenabar's first English-language effort, which was co-produced by Kidman's ex Tom Cruise; his feature Open Your Eyes was remade as Vanilla Sky by writer/director Cameron Crowe, starring, of all people, Cruise. ~ Jason Clark, All Movie Guide
