Directed by Hal Hartley.
Beauty meets the Beast, and neither is sure just what to make of the other, in a modern-dress comic variation on the ancient folk tale, written and directed by the eternally offbeat Hal Hartley. Beatrice (Sarah Polley) works with the office staff of a sleazy tabloid TV news show, run by a harridan producer (Helen Mirren) eager for something other than the usual spate of violent crimes and natural disasters that are her show's bread and butter. The producer sends her camera crew to Iceland in search of something new and unusual, and they certainly find it when they run across a village that has its own monster (Robert John Burke), a large part-mammal and part-lizard with a short temper and habit of killing people who get on his nerves. The show's camera crew (including Beatrice's boyfriend) doesn't survive their first encounter with the monster, and Beatrice is sent to find out what happened to them. En route to Iceland, Beatrice's plane crashes into the waters off the coast, and while she survives the accident, a group of unsympathetic locals decide (after a few drinks too many) to take her to the monster's lair, where a grim fate doubtless awaits her. Except that the monster is a bit depressed and Beatrice isn't in the mood to take any guff from anyone; after the monster wonders aloud why folks aren't as frightened of him as they once were, he asks Beatrice to help him find Dr. Artaud (Baltasar Kormakur), a mad scientist who might be able to cure him of the curse of eternal life. No Such Thing received its world premiere at the 2001 Cannes Film Festival, where it was screened as part of the Un Certain Regard series. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

"
Wow, Rizzo. I had never heard of that movie before but it looks pretty freaking cool! I have added it to my list of 'must-see' movies! Thank you very much! Is there any nudity?
Ooooh, I'm quite interested what you will think of it. Like I said, I'm not sure if I would even classify it as a horror movie. Then again I expect you probably would since you have a pretty broad definition. I simply love the dialogue in this movie. Hopefully you'll be fascinated by the monster as well. There is no nudity, but it does feature Sarah Polly in that bondage looking dress you see in the graphic there. Hartley's actresses also have a very distinctive kind of beauty to them. I do have to disagree with you there. I doubt anything in Cobb's career (or any actor's career ever) can rival his performance in 12 Angry Men. I always think of it as the greatest.
Well you both have my interests peeked with No Such Thing (2001). I am amazed it go ... " [More]

"
I'm not really not sure if this would qualify as a horror movie, but The Monster in No Such Thing for sure!
Wow, Rizzo. I had never heard of that movie before but it looks pretty freaking cool! I have added it to my list of 'must-see' movies! Thank you very much! Is there any nudity? I thought long and hard before naming Dracula my favorite horror movie character. I thought about Freddy and Quasimodo and Regan (from The Exorcist) and Lt. Kinderman ( from The Exorcist ...Lee J. Cobb giving the performance of his career) and Rhodes (from Dawn Of The Dead) and Quint (from JAWS) ... Dracula is the coolest (if not the smartest) horror movie icon of all time. He has appeared in more movies than anyone else and his sense of style and his passion for the young ladies and his supernatural abilities are second to none. Dracula IS the King. < GOR > " [More]

"I'm not really not sure if this would qualify as a horror movie, but The Monster in No Such Thing for sure! Otherwise either Jack Torrence in The Shining, Raymond Lemorne in The Vanishing, or the truck in Duel. " [More]

"Yeah he has done a lot! Actually I've never seen Girl from Monday (heard it was his absolute worst) or Book of Life. And although I think Amateur is really good, it is probably the least of the movies I've seen of his. Henry Fool and No Such Thing are probably my favorites along with The Unbelievable Truth. Check that last one out. I never really feel like he's despirately trying for style. I feel like his style must be something that just kind of comes out of him. It seems true to someone's point of view rather than something derivative. I certainly haven't seen anything else that I can easily compare it to. Here's a transcript of some stuff that Spielberg said about Kubrick that I saw on the Eyes Wide Shut DVD special features. http://www.archiviokubrick.it/ english/others/content/index.h tml?main=spielberg I found the bit about Cagney especially interesting. It made me want to go out and see a Cagney movie after hearing that. This doesn't really answe the question of w ... " [More]
