Directed by Baz Luhrmann.
The third film from pop-music-obsessed director Baz Luhrmann tweaks the conventions of the musical genre by mixing a period romance with anachronistic dialogue and songs in the style of his previous Romeo+Juliet (1996). Ewan McGregor stars as Christian, who leaves behind his bourgeois father during the French belle époque of the late 1890s to seek his fortunes in the bohemian underworld of Montmartre, Paris. Christian meets the absinthe- and alcohol-addicted artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (John Leguizamo), who introduces him to a world of sex, drugs, music, theater, and the scandalous dance known as the cancan, all at the Moulin Rouge, a decadent dance hall, brothel, and theater that's the brainchild of Harold Zidler (Jim Broadbent). Christian also meets and falls into a tragically doomed romance with the courtesan Satine (Nicole Kidman), who becomes the star of the play he's writing, which parallels the couple's romance and utilizes rock music from a century later, including songs by Nirvana, Madonna, The Beatles, and Queen, among others. Loosely based on the opera Orpheus in the Underworld, Moulin Rouge was shown in competition at the 2001 Cannes Film Festival. ~ Karl Williams, All Movie Guide

"The movie kept you wondering about what was going to happen. I liked the fact that she thought Christian was the Duke at first, but was surprised to find out the truth. The ending is emotionally pulling, because of the fast that they were going to be together, and then the sickness takes over. I think they could have had more dancing, but other than that, the movie was amazing, and wonderfully made. " [More]

"wonderful. as if a memory of all the greastest moments of our dreams were turned into a mtv video and projected onto a screen for all to see. it is a film about the memory of love and love lost. it is about us...humankind. it is fast and giddy and sad and beautiful and insane...like the most amazing of us are. a film to watch again and again and again. and don't worry-you already know all the songs by heart . "I came across Mouin Rouge one day while going through movies we bought that had not been opened. I had no clue what it was about...and I didn't watch it. Then my friends were talking about it and how much they loved it, so finally I popped in the DVD player and watched it. My first thoughts were things like, "What's going on...Why on earth am I watching this?" But after a while I realized how much I liked it. For the next week I watched it every day, and soon I realized that it was the best movie I had ever seen. It's funny, and romantic, and the songs are brilliant. My favorites are Elephant Love Medlay and El Tango de Roxanne. It's the kind of movie that I can watch over and over and love it more each time. People will be talking aobut his movie for yars to come. " [More]

"Hi!I am Elli. New in Spout. I found Spout watching the Four Eye Monster -movie in Youtube. This is a place for me. Movie fanatic like the rest.Genres are great. I guess I mostly enjoy good comedies with a sparkle of darkness/drama. Like Little Miss Sunshine, Garden State or Lost in Translation. But I get trully excited with good action scifi stuff like the marvelous Sunshine or the first The Matrix. I love to spend time with good animation like the old Disneys The Little Mermaid or The Lion King or Japanese creations like Miyazaki`s Sen To Chihiro No Kamikakushi. When I want something really romantic I watch Before Sunset. I regard Clueless as a classic. Fabuleux destin dÁmelie Poulain makes me smile, some Bollywood movies and Moulin Rouge (in the end) makes me cry and Quentin´s Kill Bills makes me want to go jogging. Horror I cannot watch because with my over active imagination I get nightmares. Usually I prefer to see a movie I haven´t yet seen over a good mov ... " [More]

"I'm sorry, the idea.... splendid. Do a dreamily, Broadway stage style musical on the big screen. BUT the casting leaves you wondering... I cannot lie, I was entertained. Yet, not convinced. Ewan McGregor, surprises with a good voice. The porcelin doll herself, Kidman, just never pushes it over the edge. She's always almost there, but never really wins the performance. Sad, actually. The casting leaves the mind wondering, and the songs... fantasy mixed with reality. Some work, but then some just smack you right off that cloud and bring you crashing back down to earth. Romeo + Juliet was a masterpiece, and trying to top that was a mistake. Sorry to all the lovers out there, I don't want to be a hater... but that's the way the cookie crumbles. " [More]

"Moulin Rouge!—I liked the over-the-top, campy, music-video style, particularly of the first 10 minutes or so. I also liked the singing. Although I would not see this movie again, I admire the film maker’s work. His first film, Strictly Ballroom (1992), is one of the best movies to come out of Australia, and one of the only movies I’ve ever watched over again immediately. His second film, Romeo + Juliet (1996), captured a youthful and Shakespearean energy. Apparently Baz Luhrman is leaving behind this theatrical style which he and others call the Red Curtain style, and moving onto something different with a movie called Australia (2008). " [More]

"Amen on your comments on Batman Begins Mattypro. Nolan handles the material perfectly, balancing some dark realism with comic book thrills. It's a Batman movie all us Batman fans hoped would be made. And what else can be said about Christian Bale as Batman - home run. Have you seen the much overpraise Tim Burton version recently. I thought it was it was a mess the first time I saw it, and it just gets sillier with every viewing. It's Batman, not Joker. 1. Clerks 2. Given that I hadn't liked a Kevin Smith movie since Mallrats, I was blown away by how funny and affecting this movie is. Recasting these two unknown actors, ten years later, shouldn't work - but it does. 2. Waking Ned Devine. The only movie in which the combination of a quaint Irish village and cute old people doesn't make me want to claw my eyes out. 3. The Rock. Three things that are 9 times out 10 horrible. Michael Bay movies, Nick Cage movies made after 1990, Sean Connery movies made after 1987. ... " [More]

A bold artistic statement, Moulin Rouge is Baz Luhrmann's first masterpiece. Frantically edited, paced, and photographed, the film is not an easy undertaking; it forces the viewer to accept it on its terms. The sets, costumes, and sound are stylish in the extreme. The greatest risk the film takes is having the characters speak predominantly in song lyrics. The young writer Christian (Ewan McGregor) and the doomed performer Satine (Nicole Kidman) argue about whether they will fall in love while telling each other, "Love lifts us up where we belong" and "I will always love you." When they aren't speaking in song lyrics, they sing to each other, with McGregor doing a better than credible job with Elton John's "Your Song". The barrage of pop songs quickly transcends kitsch. Luhrmann uses the songs to cut across all barriers between audience members and the characters. He's not playing Name That Tune; he's commenting on the universal desire for love. The intention behind the frantic pacing is not to undercut the grand, melodramatic themes; it is not an ironic commentary on musicals or love. The passion that drips from every frame of the film is there to underscore the sweeping emotions the characters feel as they fall in love with each other. The film slows down just enough in its second half to prepare the audience for the emotionally wrenching finale, which transpires in near silent darkness. Where there was once passion, there is now nothing but the remembrance of passion. Luhrmann's film, structured in flashback, elaborates this theme. It remembers when grand passions instead of cool irony were the norm for the moviegoing public. Moulin Rouge is a joyous, elegiac shout to remember why we go to the movies. It may be too much for some people, but for a generation raised in irony, Luhrmann's film is a shocking wake-up call. ~ Perry Seibert, All Movie Guide
