Steven Spielberg's phenomenally successful sci-fi adventure thriller is graced by state-of-the-art special effects from the team of Stan Winston, Phil Tippett and Michael Lantieri from George Lucas's Industrial Light & Magic. The film follows two dinosaur experts -- Dr. Alan Grant (Sam Neill) and Dr. Ellie Sattler Laura Dern) -- as they are invited by eccentric millionaire John Hammond (Richard Attenborough) to preview his new amusement park on an island off Costa Rica. By cloning DNA harvested from pre-historic insects, Hammond has been able to create living dinosaurs for his new Jurassic Park, an immense animal preserve housing real brachiosaurs, dilophosaurs, triceratops, velociraptors, and a Tyrannosaur Rex. Accompanied by cynical scientist Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum), who is obsessed with chaos theory, and Hammond's two grandchildren (Ariana Richards and Joseph Mazzello), they are sent on a tour through Hammond's new resort in computer controlled touring cars. But as a tropical storm hits the island, knocking out the power supply, and an unscrupulous employee (Wayne Knight) sabotages the system so that he can smuggle dinosaur embryos out of the park, the dinosaurs start to rage out of control. "When I saw the title of Olly Richardson’s rant on The Empire Blog asking if CG has killed our imaginations, I presumed he meant filmmakers’ imaginations and how special effects are less creative when done with the ease of computer graphics. But no, he’s really talking about our imaginations, meaning me and you and everyone we know. I’d never given it too much thought, but maybe modern audiences are really losing their ability to believe at the movies: We never used to be so picky. If somebody watches the original King Kong or any of the works of Ray Harryhausen, you will never hear them complain about how the skeletons were a bit jerky or that the big ape’s fur didn’t blow realistically when he was climbing the Empire State Building (if they do complain, however, you should feel free to shoot them on the grounds of wrongness and philistinism). You just watch the film, acknowledge that what you are seeing couldn’t possibly exist, admire the artistry it took to create it and choose t ... " [More]

"Holy crap, has it really been 15 years since this came out? You mean to tell me I was 7 when this came out? Wow, I feel kind of old all of a sudden.So "Jurassic Park", where do I begin with this movie? This is, by all means, one of the single greatest survival-thriller-action movies ever made. The combination of thrilling action and dinosaurs just sets this apart from most anything else out, sure the sequels were both pretty bad but they don't count anymore. First of all, the acting in this movie is stupendous on all accounts. Sam Jackson, Sam Neill, Laura Dern, and Richard Attenborough all give stellar performances. Even the kids who play Lexi and Tim give great performances and set the bar(even though both of them have sort of fallen from the face of the Earth). And lest we forget the big stars of the movie, the Dinosaurs themselves.Speaking of those Dinosaurs, how awesome are those things? The CGI may seem a little dated, but it still holds so strong even all these ... " [More]

"Yet more chaos in the wake of The Fall of the Globes: yesterday, we noted that if nothing else, a minimized Golden Globes would spare us the inevitable tribute montage to Steven Spielberg, who is due to receive a Cecil B. DeMille award at the ceremony. Now it appears that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has decided (surely not without some help from the Spielberg camp) that, rather than accept the award at this year’s glorified press conference, “it would be better” (?!?) for the HFPA to just give him the same award next year, when presumably, there will be a four hour telecast to further pad with tributes to Spielberg’s special way with imperiled children, animatronic dinosaurs, animatronic children and imperiled dinosaurs. I got the Variety email alert for this story, and I admit it??????I literally, audibly cried, “Bah!” Other than that, I’ve got nothing. How about you? "As a kid, I was an amateur dinosaur aficionado. I knew all the different kinds that they knew of back in the late '70's and early '80's. So when Jurassic Park came out in 1993, I was stoked. I ended up seeing this film 8 times in the theater - I couldn't get enough. Never before had CG looked so convincing and even though I read the book, I was on the edge of my seat when the action got intense. It's the perfect mix of sci-fi and action-adventure. See it. Now. They Got It Right

"Until fairly recently, I've been known to have a knee-jerk, negative reaction to films based on books I love. Hell, even books I mildly dislike would usually rate better with me than the film version, and not always based on pure quality. A lot of that was snobbishness, a way to feel superior by telling myself the experience I had was better than the one most people in the theatre had. Of course, I've lightened up a bit, and now tend to go the other way. Where once a filmmaker changing a small detail from the book would get my ire up, I now hope for these deviations. In the end, I'll always have the book I read, and the movie should provide it's own unique experience.The movie that brought me to this way of thinking was actually the third Harry Potter movie, Prisoner of Azkaban. I'd seen the previous two, but part three was the first one I saw after reading the books. My girlfriend, and many of my friends who had read the books, disliked the movie because of how ... "Well Doctor, I'm fairly sure I haven't seen even 10% of the horror movies you have, but I will make a list anyhow.I know we have had many discussion in the past about what constitutes a horror movie. But for purposes of this list, I will try to limit myself to more strictly defined horror. "Yes, boys and ghouls, it's that magical time of the year again, when ghosts and goblins and monsters and madmen roam the earth in search of 'sweets'! That's right! It's Thanksgiving! ... Oops! To make a long story short, I just purchased a 'restored/remastered' DVD of Halloween and I watched this movie again for about the 30th time and IT JUST DOESN'T GET OLD! One of the most influential special effects movies of the early 1990s, Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park helped show the world that the future of cinema was inside a computer. With digital dinosaurs courtesy of George Lucas' Industrial Light and Magic, the film helped redefine the summer blockbuster for a new generation. Though Jurassic Park makes few pretensions to suspense, trotting out its computerized animals as early as possible, the technical magic is impressive enough to overshadow the plot's shortcomings. Most of the ethical questions that made the Michael Crichton bestseller an interesting read are voiced by Jeff Goldblum's character. Spielberg left post-production on Jurassic Park to begin work on his Best Picture winner, the Holocaust drama Schindler's List. A mediocre sequel, The Lost World, arrived four years later, also directed by Spielberg. ~ Brendon Hanley, All Movie Guide
