Directed by Pat O'Connor.
This romantic melodrama reunites The Devil's Advocate (1997) co-stars Keanu Reeves and Charlize Theron, and is directed by Irish filmmaker Pat O'Connor (Circle of Friends). Sara Deever (Theron) is a beautiful young woman who begins a new romantic relationship with a man each month, then helps him to evolve into a better and kinder human being before she moves on to the next partner. Although she's remained friendly with some of her former lovers, she's never broken her one-month rule. November's candidate is a particularly heartless business exec named Nelson Moss (Reeves), who takes a while to come around. Once he does, however, Nelson falls deeply in love, hoping to woo Sara for good; eventually, her resolve weakens. What Nelson doesn't know is the tragic secret behind the brevity of Sara's romances. A remake of a 1968 Sandy Dennis film by the same name, this contemporary version of Sweet November is less comedic and emphasizes more of its story's tearjerker qualities than the original. ~ Karl Williams, All Movie Guide

"Did you hear about the blond couple who froze to death at the drive-in? They went to see Closed for Winter. What did the fish say when he hit a concrete wall? "Dam." The above jokes -- which make me laugh every time -- are an appropriate introduction to the year's worst cinematic disasters for the following reasons: (1) The first is my favorite movie-related joke, (2) both indicate that I'm easily amused, and (3) the punch line of the second has typically been my reaction when I learn of the films I've been assigned to review. It's been a dismal year at the movies, from disappointing summer fare (how do you make Pearl Harbor boring?) to so-so independents and foreign films that have been successful simply because people are tired of feeling so bad (Amelie? Cute, but about 20 minutes too long). Then there are the no-name, no-plot groaners that I get stuck with, this year's unusually high number of which is attributable to either frantic green-lighting during ... " [More]

"This Charlize Theron/Keanu Reeves remake of 1968's Sweet November will teach all who see it a valuable lesson: Annoying plus model-beautiful equals cute and lovable. Or maybe it's that jerk attracts jerk. Those are the only explanations for the lovey-dovey coupling that eventually takes place between Theron's "eccentric" Sara (she sits on his expensive car! she stalks him! she yells embarrassing accusations at him in front of his neighbors when he refuses to give her a ride!) and Reeves' I-am-God Nelson, genius workaholic ad exec. Yes, she throws out his watch and gives away his clothes, and he storms out of her apartment when he tries too aggressively to hook up with her and she asks him to take it easy, yet all this is really a fine romance waiting to happen. The premise: Sara, after meeting Nelson at a DMV exam that he helps her get kicked out of, offers to take him into her apartment, her life, and her heart for one month. During this month, he cannot work, and ... " [More]
