Directed by Billy Bob Thornton.
Director Billy Bob Thornton explores coming of age in this Western based on Cormac McCarthy's prize-winning novel of the same name. John Grady Cole (Matt Damon) and Lacey Rawlins (Henry Thomas) are young Texan men who seek a more fulfilling life as cowboys in the slowly fading Old West, circa 1949. One night, the duo head for Mexico in hope of finding some adventure and employment, and along the way run into Blevins (Lucas Black), an even younger drifter who has supposedly stolen a horse from private property. Begrudgingly, Cole and Rawlins take him under their wing before they eventually find themselves in Mexico, working for a wealthy landowner (Ruben Blades). His stalwart and beautiful daughter Alejandra (Penelope Cruz) develops a romantic interest in Cole, which threatens the friendship between him and Rawlins, not to mention their living quarters, where Alejandra's watchful aunt (Miriam Colon) warns Cole that she has professed allegiance to her. Cole and Rawlins' thrill-seeking adventures with Blevins and the stolen horse catch up to them, however, and they are held prisoners in a brutal penitentiary, where their cowboy instincts are put to the ultimate test. Cole, meanwhile, wants nothing more than to get back to Alejandra and resume their love affair. The film also features Bruce Dern in a small role as a judge who eventually gives much-desired guidance to Cole. ~ Jason Clark, All Movie Guide

"Have you read or seen Sphere? That's a fantastic book! I actually didn't think the movie was that bad either, but it can't come close to the book.I think there are a few warring phenomena going on when I watch a movie adapted from a book I love when trying to evaluate how much I love the movie. For one I will give the movie a lot of credit that it doesn't deserve just because it's giving me images from a book I love. I feel like even when the movie skips or leaves out tons of information or scenes in the book. I still see all of that information as being a part of the movie. Rather I project my love for the book onto the movie and give it a context that I love without the movie having to do any real work at all. So in that way I am giving the movie positive points it probably doesn't deserve. At the same time, if there are any differences in the movie from the book that seem to undermind or contradict something I love about the book then I will often co ... "Alright. I am a huge Cormac McCarthy fan and yet I've always avoided Billy Bob Thorton's All the Pretty Horses because of the atrocious reviews. Now I hear the Coen brothers are about to release No Country for Old Men this August and I'm a little excited, even though I thought the book was perhaps McCarthy's weakest. I'm excited because Woody Harrelson is the bad guy with the cow killer and that just seems right to me. But what really both scares and thrills me is Ridley Scott is doing Blood Meridian in 2009. Script by the guy who wrote the script for The Departed. This is either going to be the coolest movie ever or a complete disaster. Either way, it is bound to be quite disturbing. How to film the Judge? Whose to play the Kid? What an awesome prospect. I was thinking that the best candidate I can imagine to direct this would have been Robert Rodriguez. But then again, Terrance Mallik would have done it justice of the sort it deserves. I don't know if Cli ... " [More]

"Been a big Elmore Leonard fan for a while, and had read the book this was based on when it was first released. At the time, I really felt that this would make a great movie, but when the movie came out, I was initially disappointed in the casting, and on the first viewing in '98 I was underimpressed. Not really fair to the movie, as I have a tendency to get disappointed in most adaptations that I grow attached to beforehand. I felt Jenifer Lopez was a bad choice for the female lead, and overall, the great story got back seat to the romance angle.Recently got a chance to revisit this one and it has gotten better with distance. A lot of casting in the minor roles is brilliant, from Don Cheadle to Catherine Keener to Luiz Guzman to Ving Rhames, to Michael Keaton (actually playing the same character he played in another Leonard adaptation, Jackie Brown), and an absolutely hilarious Steve Zahn. The direction and screenplay are crisp and snappy and moves along at a nice pace, employi ... " [More]

The mythology of the Western is given a solid treatment by director Billy Bob Thornton in his first film since 1996's Sling Blade, proving he is a filmmaker with strong instincts. Still, Pretty Horses' brevity in some moments hints there was a richer, more shaded picture before its heavy re-editing, and as a result, the work is sometimes a bit unsteady. That said, the script is extremely well-adapted by Ted Tally (who skillfully transferred The Silence of the Lambs to the screen), capturing the rugged beauty of the West with complete authenticity. The leads are believable and well cast (though Penelope Cruz still struggles with her American characterizations), and despite its shortcomings, the movie remains an admirable and reverential poem to a much-forgotten time. Remarkably, Pretty Horses' tumultuous production history isn't apparent in the final version, although a reported two hours of footage was cut from it; the battle over final cut eventually led Miramax Films to take over domestic distribution from partner Columbia Pictures. Additionally, Damon ended up taking the lead role after Leonardo DiCaprio passed on it, a redux of Damon's casting in The Talented Mr. Ripley, another DiCaprio pass. ~ Jason Clark, All Movie Guide
