Directed by Christopher Nolan.
A man is determined to find justice after the loss of a loved one, even though he is incapable of fully remembering the crime, in this offbeat thriller. Leonard (Guy Pearce) is a man who is struggling to put his life back together after the brutal rape and murder of his wife. But Leonard's problems are different from those of most people in his situation; he was beaten severely by the same man who killed his wife. The most significant manifestation of Leonard's injuries is that his short-term memory has been destroyed; he is incapable of retaining any new information, and must resort to copious note-taking and Polaroid photographs in order to keep track of what happens to him over the course of a day (he's even tattooed himself with a few crucial bits of information he can't get along without). Leonard retains awareness that his wife was brutally murdered, however, and he's convinced that the culprit still walks the streets. Leonard is obsessed with the notion of taking revenge against the man who has ruined his life, and he sets out to find him, getting help from Natalie (Carrie-Anne Moss), who appears to be a sympathetic barmaid, and Teddy (Joe Pantoliano), who claims to be Leonard's friend, even though Leonard senses that he cannot be trusted. Writer/director Christopher Nolan adapted Memento from a short story by his brother Jonathan Nolan. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

"[quote user="SkyPilot"] [quote user="Hawkmage"] Aren't there any good horror films set during a High School Reunion? Isn't there any way we can get The Breakfast Club to be attacked by zombies, for cryin' out loud? [/quote] Oh man! A high school reunion horror movie would be so frickin' cool! For the main character I'm imagining a nerd who was counting on being a late bloomer, but he's more of a never-bloomer...until the pressure of the blood-soaked reunion forces him to become the hero he never thought he could be! [/quote] Actually, there is. I haven't seen it yet, but it looks pretty stupid (in the good way). National Lampoon's Class Reunion. In regard to double features, I hate the fact that I moved from the Los Angeles area right before the New Beverly Cinema started doing awesome double features (http://www.newbevcinema.com/c alendar.cfm). If any of you leave near there, check it out. They also get guest directors to come by and plan their own mini-festivals. The only double ... " [More]

"My picks...1. The Man Who Wasn't There2. Pi3. Schindler's List4. Good Night, and Good Luck.5. Sin CityPretty conventional, but I've still got a lot to see...and I would also like to add Memento to that list, but that's really only half in black and white, so it doesn't really count completely I guess. "After much deliberation, I have created a comprehensive list of my current 30 favorite movies ever made. I am still debating about it in my head, considering there are still so many more movies that I want to include on it. However, I widdled it down to 30. I'll reveal them periodically over the next few days, with my absolute favorites (1-10) having long explanations, and then after that getting shorter and shorter. Here's numbers 21-30 with brief explanations.21. The Shining Stanley Kubrick's masterpiece of horror is in my humble opinion the scariest film ever made. I have never seen anything that has contained as much suspense and as much sheer terror as this movie. And while I usually don't like the genre a whole lot, I love this movie.22. The 40 Year Old Virgin/Knocked Up There was a tie here, and I figured I could group them together since it's the same crew. Apatow's movies have changed comedy, and both of these films are almost beyond hila ... " [More]

"Sometimes a film tries too hard to be different, to be unique, to stand apart from the rest. Christopher Nolan's "Memento", however, does it with a brilliant touch. The narrative takes a whole new and offbeat twist by telling the film backwards as our "hero" Leonard(Guy Pearce) tries to put together the mystery of who killed his wife. Along the way he encounters Teddy(Joe Pantoliano), who is trying to help him put everything together. He also meets Natalie(Carrie-Anne Moss) who seemingly helps him out of the kindness in her heart. The film is broken in it's narrative style, with bits of the story repeating in a sort of over-lap fashion that allows the viewer to better put things together. There is, however, a part of the film to goes forward as we see Leonard talking on the phone, and these sequences are shown in a black and white vouyeristic view. At the "end" of the film the two narratives finally collide into one semi-coherient story. The sc ... " [More]

"Although I give props for a unique story, and fairly good acting. I found the camera shots to be dizzying! The story has a twist at the end, but don't expect to leave feeling "happy" or "inspired" this movie leaves you feeling quite the opposite. " [More]

"Wow. Guy Pierce. Wow. Yeah. This film is amazing. I'm still blown away every time I watch it. It's so original. I'd never seen anything like it before. I'm not sure, it may be a rip off from an Asian film or something, but it was very well done and I completely enjoyed it. All the friends that I've exposed to this film always are smiling when it's finished. Not because the ending...or should I say beginning, is happy but because they approve. When I try making my friends watch Harold and Maude it always ends bad. Haha. But this film is definitely in a league of it's own, in my humble opinion. Generally I don't like thrillers because they make me nervous. I'm a wimp. I'll always be the first to admit it. But this film gave me a false sense of security so it worked out well. " [More]

Christopher Nolan's crafty, twisty thriller builds itself on the foundation of film noirs past and present, but what gives it its own special kick is Nolan's steadfast determination against sentimentalizing his characters or subject, which immediately gives the film turf credibility. Memento is built on a device that doesn't always work in other pictures -- the narrative is told in reverse -- but here it has a pulsating life all its own. Nolan's taut screenplay and inventive direction find the nasty heart of the central tale, and the cast members offer juicy performances -- especially the versatile Guy Pearce, who manages a convincing zigzag of emotions and attitudes. One could argue that Memento is a bit too cold to truly mesmerize, but even for its chilliness, the film works as a labyrinthine entertainment. Its smart sensibility and willingness to embrace the best of its noir origins is what makes it memorable. This film was the toast of the 2001 Sundance Film Festival, picking up the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award -- though many carped it should have taken additional prizes. ~ Jason Clark, All Movie Guide
