The second of the George Lucas/Steven Spielberg Indiana Jones epics is set a year or so before the events in Raiders of the Lost Ark (1984). After a brief brouhaha involving a precious vial and a wild ride down a raging Himalyan river, Indy (Harrison Ford) gets down to the problem at hand: retrieving a precious gem and several kidnapped young boys on behalf of a remote East Indian village. His companions this time around include a dimbulbed, easily frightened nightclub chanteuse (Kate Capshaw), and a feisty 12-year-old kid named Short Round (Quan Ke Huy). Throughout, the plot takes second place to the thrills, which include a harrowing rollercoaster ride in an abandoned mineshaft and Indy's rescue of the heroine from a ritual sacrifice. There are also a couple of cute references to Raiders of the Lost Ark, notably a funny variation of Indy's shooting of the Sherpa warrior. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

"That is really interesting, Gor. It is really amazing how desensatized (spelling) I am anymore, half of these movies I kept thinking - there isn't any gorey scenes in that movie, but when I started thinking about it, yes there are some pretty gorey scenes. " [More]

"Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom seems like the slightly more extreme Indiana Jones movie. This movie is defiantly more dark, contains a less known non-biblical legend and artifact. The movie also seems like it would be very offensive to Indian people, but I don't know maybe all Indian people eat is monkey brains, bugs, and snakes. The movie had all the funny cheesiness that only Harrison Ford can make fantastic. What I mean by that is the funny camera angles, the music when Harrison is with a girl,and his little arguments with girls. The ending also had all that hilarious cheesiness that more cinema movies should have.When I watch Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, I don't think of it as a work of art but a fun movie with a large entertainment value. The story line, and some things that happen seem pretty ridiculous but its fun to watch. So in conclusion if you like Indiana Jones movies, you would probable loves this movie, otherwise you will probable hate this movie. " [More]

"This is not going to be one of those columns that goes into a lengthy diatribe about the influence on Dr. Indiana Jones had on this reviewer’s life as a child. I refuse to prattle on about owning a fedora and a bullwhip used to scare the bejeezus out of the family dog, or the backyard films created as homage to “Raiders of the Lost Ark” and the countless scars and bruises that serve as a testament to my inexperience and/or stupidity in attempts to replicate the adventures of the intrepid archeologist. It seems that the prerequisite in reviewing this latest installment in the Indiana Jones canon, “Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” has almost every critic launching into some wistful rant on its impact of his/her life. And while I am certainly one to appreciate the personal power of cinematic experiences, I think this self-indulgent therapy session approach is a tad tiresome now. "About 20 minutes into 'Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull,' there is a humdinger of a chase that glides and slides through the streets and corridors around the campus where the legendary Dr. Jones (Harrison Ford) is a Professor. I'm not sure exactly how the conclusion of the chase affected the plot, but I do remember that it ended with a punchline - and nobody in the theater laughed. It's sad to say, but a heck of a lot of this new adventure plays like a parody of the (much better) films that have gone before. I'd like to think I gave the film a fair shot. As with the previous Indiana Jones adventures, we open on something natural that resembles the Paramount logo, followed by the credits in the elegant typeface that has graced each film (save 'Temple of Doom'). A simple, fun sequence orients us that this story takes place in 1957, and we end on a military base hidden in the middle of the desert. So far, so good. It's even exciting to get our first glimpse of Indy's ... " [More]

"My older brother was the devil. Seriously, Beelzebub living in the room next to mine. Growing up he would be my babysitter and force me to watch every single scary film the local movie store had on video.1.) Sharks (Jaws, et al) - Living on the West Coast less than twenty minutes from the beach, it was a safe bet that after watching all of these our family trips to the beach kept me securely on the dunes as far away from the water as possible. "Sleek, evanescent, shadowy, with a low-gloss platinum luster reminiscent of Wender's Wings of Desire, Kerry Conran's Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow is a grand ride, full of whiz-bang gimmickry and homage to the glory days of retro-Science Fiction. An attempt to refine, fulfill, and exceed the spirit of wonder and astonishment that permeated comic books, novels, and movies like The Day the Earth Stood Still, Flash Gordon, and Metropolis. Funny though, once you start making a list of Sky Captain's numerous visual allusions, it's hard to know where to stop — Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Star Wars, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, and Veronica Voss — with its expressionist use of high relief, dusty sunlight, and columns of smoke. Bigger, busier, louder, and far less satisfying than Raiders of the Lost Ark, this first sequel (or, chronologically speaking, prequel) starts with a bang but then indulges in some serious miscalculations. After saddling Harrison Ford with a whiny love interest (Kate Capshaw) and a cloying young sidekick, the film then plunges them all into a grim, subterranean adventure with few of the globe-trotting thrills of the original. The movie, somewhat understandably, stirred controversy at the time of its release for its violence, gross-out gags, and general darkness. While the furor was exaggerated, all those grim deaths and enslaved children do kind of put a damper on the fun. Even so, a Spielberg-directed adventure can only plunge so far, and the director delivers the goods in numerous set pieces, though the series itself did not recover until 1989's Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. ~ Keith Phipps, All Movie Guide
