Directed by Alexandre Rockwell.
Alexandre Rockwell's quirky autobiographical comedy stars Steve Buscemi as Adolpho Rollo, a would-be screenwriter who is obsessed with getting his 500-page script "Unconditional Surrender" produced. Desperate for money, he places an ad for financial backing, which is answered by con man Joe (Seymour Cassel). The film was shot in color, but was released theatrically in black & white. Both verisions eventually made their way to home video release. ~ Jason Ankeny, All Movie Guide

"Very good memory! Jennifer related in the interview that it started to snow, the director ( her husband at the time???) saw the opportunity, called her, see hightailed it out of her acting class and they just did it, unscripted! I am not sure if the camera was different. It looked like the Zapruder Bell & Howell Model 414 PD 8 mm Zoomatic Director Series camera to me which made it all the more surreal. " [More]

"They also mentioned on the commentary for that scene in In The Soup that the filming of that scene was not in the schedule at all. They saw that it was snowing outside and quick ran up and just filmed without any script for that scene. I also seem to remember them saying it was shot on a totally different camera than the rest of the movie too. And I may also remember them saying this was one of the first things they shot... My memory may not be perfect though. " [More]

"I watched In the Soup last night and became overwhelmed with one moment, one scene ( well actually two ). It was with Steve Buscemi's character Aldolpho, Jennifer Beals character Angelica, and her cousin/brother Paul (Sam Rockwell) on the roof. The three were on the roof and Aldolpho and Angelica took turns filming the other two. It is in Black and White ( I read that there was a color version too ). Snow came floating down and Angelica twirled round and round. Filmed in slow motion, to a close-up of her face. She had the most blissful, beatific expression on her face. I watched it over and over...time stopped. In the special features after, she commented on that scene and she said that she ( the character ) just felt free...I just wondered how she was able to do it and how the director Alexandre Rockwell captured it.There are those moments and I wonder what others people see. I have some in Shame and the Eel, that I will put down. " [More]

"This blog entry is part of my “movie year countdown”. To read more about that check out my first Spout filmblog entryIn the SoupI had fairly high hopes for this movie that just weren't fulfilled. It won best dramatic feature at the famous 1992 Sundance Film Festival. And Buscemi is usually one of my favorites.I kept looking for reasons to like the movie. And I can tell you there are some. Seymour Cassel is usually fun to watch (although he probably would get on my nerves if I had to spend all day with him). There are some moments that really made me laugh, particularly one time when Skippy is giving Adolpho a "ride home". I can't remember the dialogue exactly, but it felt great. And the small performance by the man whose house they break into was sort of short and divergent but great as was commented many times in the special features. I'm looking at the cast list, and I think the actor's name is Sully Boyar.Other than a few nice momen ... " [More]

"I'd say In The Soup is sort of like a precursor to Living in Oblivion. One with Steve Buscemi as a prospective indpendent filmmaker, the other where he's in the middle of making an actual film. Although I'm not a huge fan of either movie. " [More]

"Here’s the dilemma. I have a list of well over three thousand movies I want to see saved on IMDB. I have a subscription to Netflix and recently every time I return a DVD it has been an extremely arduous task to make the decision as to which movie I should see next. In an effort to narrow down my choices and make the process of choosing slightly less overwhelming I have devised a system, almost a bit of a game for me. Here’s how it goes. For my first film selection, I have narrowed the options down to only films that were released in the year 2006. Then after I have watched that movie, my next selection would have to be a film released in 2005. Then I would see a film from 2004, then 2003, etc. The process of deciding is still laborious, but actually quite a bit more exciting. (I'm going by IMDB as my source for release years)I have already been making a list and have also already begun watching the films. I decided this might be a good time to start fooling ...
