Directed by Sam Raimi.
The third in director Sam Raimi's stylish, comic book-like horror trilogy that began with The Evil Dead (1982), this tongue-in-cheek sequel offers equal parts sword-and-sorcery-style action, gore, and comedy. Bruce Campbell returns as the one-armed Ash, now a supermarket employee ("Shop Smart...Shop S-Mart") who is transported by the powers of a mysterious book back in time with his Oldsmobile '88 to the 14th century medieval era. Armed only with a shotgun, his high school chemistry textbook, and a chainsaw that mounts where his missing appendage once resided, the square-jawed, brutally competent Ash quickly establishes himself as a besieged kingdom's best hope against an "army of darkness" currently plaguing the land. Since the skeleton warriors have been resurrected with the aid of the Necronomicon (the same tome that can send Ash back to his own time) he agrees to face the enemy in battle. Ash also finds romance of a sort along the way with a beautiful damsel in distress, Sheila (Embeth Davidtz), and contends with his own doppelganger after mangling an important incantation. ~ Karl Williams, All Movie Guide

"Here is my list, although it is a bit different in that the list allows only one Film from each of the 31 years, which believe me, limits the choices; for instance 1986: The FlyFrom BeyondHenry: Portrait of a Serial KillerThe HitcherInvaders from MarsManhunterNomadsVamp1987 is just as hardI am working on another one, which is just my 31 favorites regardless of how many a year. These choices listed, fit my definition of horror. They are horrifying and extremely unsettling, but may not be, in the strictest sense, horror. but well, here it is. Oh, I also did not not include the Alien films which although 'monster goes boo!', even though I love every one of them, fall somewhere in the realm of Science Fiction to me...enough gibberish, here it is:By the way, I want 'Mommie Dearest' to be No. 1, but that is another story.Years 1976 through 2007 ( the Spout year listings are a bit different than Wikipedia's which I used ) 31. 1984 A Nightmare on ... "If you have a stupid sense of humor, Army of Darkness is a hoot! A guy, who sells sporting goods at S Mart, has evil take over his hand, so he cuts it off and replaces it with a chain saw. Kind of sets the tone. He travels back in time, goes after a book, tries to fight evil with his boom stick (shot gun), etc. The story line is strange, but it does have some very funny parts. Yes, margaritas will help on this one, but it is one of my favorites! " [More]

"Yes, boys and ghouls, it's that magical time of the year again, when ghosts and goblins and monsters and madmen roam the earth in search of 'sweets'! That's right! It's Thanksgiving! ... Oops! My bad! I had my calender on the wrong page! To make a long story short, I just purchased a 'restored/remastered' DVD of Halloween and I watched this movie again for about the 30th time and IT JUST DOESN'T GET OLD! There is a story behind this one, but basically, there are actually some movies that I don't mind seeing over and over again! What a phenomena ! Anyhow, AOL has compiled (yet another) list of the all time best Horror Movies! You can check it out here... Best Horror Movies of All Time: 31 Days of Horror - Moviefone. If I were to have to pick my Top Ten all-time favorite Horror Movies, I think that list would change... day to day... depending a lot upon my mood... "You DO like to try and antagonize me, don't you, Aaron? I am FIRM in my statement (and in other areas as well) , that "The Evil Dead" is FAR superior to "Evil Dead 2" AND "Army Of Darkness" ... "The Evil Dead" is a pure HORROR FILM... in the 'old school' tradition! The 'follow-ups' were merely comedies... the likes of "Abbott And Costello Meet Frankenstein" ... I like the original one much better... " [More]

"When I first watched this movie, I had no clue that it was actually making fun of other movies. Hell, I didn't even know that there were any movies before this one until just last year. I live under a rock for sure. But, I still enjoyed this movie... even the 4th time around. It makes me giggle. " [More]

"There have been several different zombie video games that have been turned into movies. For instance, Resident Evil (WOO!), Silent Hill, (though it is debatable whether some of the creatures in SH are actually zombies or just demons) House of the Dead and Doom. There also have been movies about zombies that have been turned into video games such as Army of Darkness and Evil Dead. I think that this can be either WAY COOL or WAY A BUNCH OF CRAP. House of the Dead, for instance, was just wasted celluloid, followed by an even worse sequel. I think Resident Evil, though, (the first one) was just genious. The zombies were awesome, and, if you have read some other posts in this group you would know that I think Alice is a badass and Milla Jovovich is my goddess. I do wish, though, that "Alice" had remained nameless in the credits because they never mention her name in the movie. And the Red Queen! What an ingenious idea! Creeptastic, also. And I will give it more credit by ackn ... " [More]

"There actually have been a huge number of instances of directors remaking their own work.Yasujiro Ozu essentially remade most of his movies over and over from what I hear, some officially like A Story of Floating Weeds (1934) and Floating Weeds (1959)Quite recently it seems as though directors of foreign movies that are successful, often remake their films in English with American stars. Here's a few examples.Robert RodriguezEl Mariachi (1992)Desperado (1995)George SluizerThe Vanishing (1988)The Vanishing (1993)Takashi ShimizuJu-On: The Grudge (2003)The Grudge (2004)Michael HanekeFunny Games (1997)Funny Games (2008)Hideo NakataRingu 2 (1999)The Ring Two (2005)Consider the fact that Evil Dead 2 is essentially a remake of The Evil Dead. I hear that is because Raimi wanted to use footage from The Evil Dead in the beginning of Army of Darkness but he lost the rights. So he decided to just remake the whole movie first. I'm not sure if this is actually true.A lot of filmmaker ... " [More]

"I think they made Evil Dead II with the thought that no one really watched the first Evil Dead movie because it was so low budget - since they kind of did a recap of the first movie at the beginning of Evil Dead II (although the recap really wasn't completely like the first movie). Anyway, I have to say that I LOVE ARMY of DARKNESS, I just think it's so funny. Maybe it's just my campy sense of humor (I will admit that I even bought a few of the little skeleton figurines and put them on my shelf). The first Evil Dead was very creepy even with the cheesey makeup, I do enjoy the first one better than the second one, but the third one is my favorite. I totally agree with The Howling and Halloween - it was just almost like Halloween II was still part of the first movie since it was just a continuation, but the first one there is no comparison. Now I loved both Friday the 13th 1 and 2 - the rest of them were just fun slasher movies and that's about it, nothing really ... An excellent tongue-in-cheek horror film that's loosely a sequel to the cult favorite Evil Dead pictures, this larger budgeted follow-up fails to capitalize as well as it might have on its delightful high-concept premise. That's a criticism targeted strictly to non-horror buffs, however; true genre fans probably won't even notice, given the accepted paucity of intelligent plotting in most horror outings. Besides, an abundance of dandy dialogue, pop cultural references, and imaginative action sequences nearly enough makes up for a story that occasionally disappoints. Bruce Campbell returns in the role of the heroic Ash, a part that the actor performs once again with panache, reminding his followers and non-fans alike what a shame it is that the likable, square-jawed B-movie impresario hasn't been elevated to A-list leading man status as of yet. Director Sam Raimi takes it a little easier on the stylish camera work, seamlessly blending the visuals into his story telling, maturing as a filmmaker, but still a gleeful enough fan himself to inject some stop-motion critters straight from the Ray Harryhausen school of special effects. The film's other credits are impressive: music from the great Danny Elfman and a supporting cast that includes classy actress Embeth Davidtz of Schindler's List (1993), of all people. It's not for everyone but for the heavy metal-rock & roll-loving, horror movie-devoted populace, Army of Darkness (1993) will satisfy their jonesing for a good cinematic time. ~ Karl Williams, All Movie Guide
