They had only raw courage to fall back on as they went through basic training and the government's flight programs designed to prepare them for combat. America's World War I "Aces" flew combat missions in planes that had few of the technological devices that are taken for granted by most of today's pilots. Aerial strategies and fighter tactics were critical to these men who are often referred to as World War I's "Knights of the Air."
