Directed by Satyajit Ray.
The Unvanquished is the second of Indian director Satyajit Ray's "Apu Trilogy" (the first was Pather Panchali). Ray's young protagonist Apu is permitted a formal education over the gentle objections of his mother, who'd wanted him to be priest. Eventually, Apu earns a university scholarship and arrives in the teeming metropolis of Calcutta. Overwhelmed by life in the Big City, the impressionable country boy forgets about his loving mother. By the time Apu returns to his home, he finds it's too late to pick up pieces. Smaran Ghosal plays the adult Apu, with Pinaki Sen Gupta portraying his younger counterpart in the flashback. Aparajito was derived from a novel by Bibhutibhusan. The film also features a musical score by Ravi Shankar. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

"The original Star Wars / Empire Strikes Back / Return of the Jedi will always be the best for me, but I would have to agree that Back to the Future is near perfect as well.I don't know if I would actually call Sergio Leone's and Clint Eastwood's "man with no name trilogy" a real trilogy since it just sort of uses the same character but wasn't really intended to be a trilogy from what I know. But they are great movies. The Mad Max trilogy is kind of fun too. With my favorite being Road Warrior, then Beyond the Thunderdome, then the original.Heh there are actually a couple movies that I have seen that are part of a trilogy and they are really good, but I haven't seen the rest of the movies in the trilogy. As for Dogville, I don't think the last movie has been made yet. However with the Three Colors Trilogy, I have seen Red, and it's so good I don't know why I haven't seen Blue and White yet. There are a few that I eally want to see but are hard to ge ... Aparajito is the second and perhaps best of Satyajit Ray's Apu trilogy. Much of the appeal of Ray's work lies in his universal themes, in this case the transitional period of a child's growing into an adult and leaving home to find the world. Ray builds from this foundation to give his characters a variety of experiences and to emphasize one of his major themes, the inevitability of change. Although it was not distributed outside of India until later, Aparajito was first released in 1956. The big English-language films of that year were trivial spectacles like Around the World in 80 Days and The Ten Commandments. It is a tribute to Ray that his work has remained relevant to current-day audiences throughout the world. ~ Richard Gilliam, All Movie Guide
