I know a lot of people like Coen brothers films, but this one is rarely a favorite. It is one of mine because of the great questions it asks about about the balance of art and commerce, academia and the everyman. Barton Fink wants to create something for the masses, "something great... something wonderful". Of course he's a fink and knows nothing of these things as he strives to live the "life of the mind" rather than with people. Add a little side commentary about super-heroes, racism, and sexism for spice. A beheading. A beautiful ending about letting go.

I know that when I saw this, I was unduly influenced by the title sequence with Rosie Perez dancing to pounding Public Enemy. And what it meant for what is now known as hip hop to a middle class white boy in 1989. And you couldn't get much cooler than Spike Lee. Okay, I was 19. But it strikes me to this day as a beautifully orchestrated play. A parable. Whether Mookie should've thrown the trash can through the window – whether one violent act is justifiable to avoid a worse one – is less significant than asking whether we are doing the right thing. A question always worth asking.

In the future, this film may mark the start of what will be known as the Bill Murray Renaissance. His familiar, rocky, goofy past as an actor (or whatever) is revealed in each crack of his face, and every sideways glance. He's at once sad and hilarious and a fool. It feels like a weird glimpse into my own middle age future, both depressing and hopeful. Scarlett Johansson is an angel, but her movie husband is too self absorbed, too much of a boy to notice. Opportunity tempts Murray but in the end he's more father than lover to the girl. The film is beautiful and cathartic. Waiting for Godot in Tokyo. And who isn't in love with the idea of Sofia Coppola?

This film was recommended to me by a friend while I was in school in Switzerland. She said it had "the most beautiful glass of tea" she had ever seen and she was right. An ethereal yellow light makes everything in this film glow. Its nostalgic appreciation of simple life pleasures and trains and darkness and sex and death and rain and chance is all the good and is Europe. The music is a drama which keeps things at the marrow level, while Irène Jacob is life itself as she floats effortlessly between different characters, languages, and cultures.
