Directed by Wim Wenders.
Legendary filmmaker Wim Wenders returns to the screen with this loosely structured murder mystery. The Million Dollar Hotel unites Wender's obsession with cool music, lost souls, and American trash culture. Set in 2001, the film opens with Tom Tom (Jeremy Davies) taking a flying leap off the roof of the Million Dollar Hotel, an ironically titled dive in the seedy section of L.A. Told in an extended flashback, Tom Tom recounts the murder investigation of a down-and-out artist and son of a media mogul, Izzy Goldkiss (Tim Roth), who also fell off the hotel. FBI special agent Skinner (none other than Mel Gibson), sporting a neck brace, looks into the death only to discover that the building is teeming with weirdos and losers. There is Vivien (Amanda Plummer), who claims to be the fiancée of the rock star; Geronimo (Jimmy Smits), a huckster trying to make a buck by selling Izzy's abstract painting; Eloise (Milla Jovovich), a burned out prostitute with a passion for intellectual literature; and Dixie (Peter Stormare), who swears up and down that he is the fifth Beatle. As the film progresses, Skinner proves to be just as much of a freak as the hotel tenets -- he was born with a third arm that was surgically removed from his back. Just as in his Until the End of the World (1991), Wenders features a fantastic soundtrack including songs from Bono, Daniel Lanois, and Brian Eno. The Million Dollar Hotel opened the 2000 Berlin Film Festival. ~ Jonathan Crow, All Movie Guide

"An LA flophouse inhabited by an extended family of the walking wounded and more than a few scheming schemers. A mysterious death. Add earnest, and psychotic, FBI Agent Skinner (Mel Gibson) who's at least as strange as any of the hotel's inhabitants. What's not to like? Million Dollar Hotel is fairly enticing at the front end if for nothing more than the opening scene and Jeremy Davies character, Tom Tom, a damaged but sweet-innocent narrator who guides us through a byzantine plot stitched together from a series of vignettes, flashbacks and reactions to Skinner's investigatory shenanigans. As the story progresses, the plot gets muddy but the freaks are intersting enough to keep you engaged. I may be the only person on this planet who wanted to watch it a second time, but I did and I liked it even more. See this film for it's great soundtrack, some interesting plot gimmicks (Bono wrote the story with Nicholas Klein) and it's crew of flakey grifters surviving ... " [More]

"So, when i joined this group there were a couple of films that came to mind right away that i added to the lists. The first one was probably the one I am most sick of hearing about, but you have to put it on the list anyway, right? The Graduate, soundtrack uses all Simon and Garfunkel songs, and who doesn't love them? Parsely, Sage, Rosemary, Thyme. That's all I have to say about that. Next I thought of The Virgin Suicides; Sofia Coppola's semi-creep-yet-beautiful take on a family of sheltered girls. The film actually kind of freaked me out the first time I saw it, but I loved the music. I didn't know it at the time, but the entire soundtrack was created by Air. Good stuff. The next two aren't history makers or anything, I just have a serious thing for U2 and I would be remise if I left them out. The Million Dollar Hotel was not that great of a movie, I liked it for some of its thematic content, but really, did Bono, Larry, Adam, and the Edge have to chill in the lobby during the m ... "this has to be one of the most boring movies i've ever seen. you think, hey, mel gibson's in this one! but he's barely in it as much as you'd expect. jovovich and davies are bland, acting almost retarded (artsy? whatever). jimmy smits is in this movie. jimmy smits. don't watch this waste of time, the music will put you to sleep, and so will the acting. i finished this movie and was glad that it was just a dollar rental and not a blind buy.also, i think bono was one of the producers. ya got me. "I totally understand why no one really likes this movie. The plot is murky, told in flashback from a mentally disabled person. The satirical jabs at the art community and the nature of celebrity seem tacked-on, and the core mystery of the film is pretty easy to figure out.But then you have to consider the dream-like mood of the entire piece, the performances of the actors who go above and beyond, trying to sell the preposterous story (seriously, this is one of Mel Gibson's better performances), and the interesting mish-mash of people who wander in front of the camera (Bud Court, Amanda Plummer, Donal Logue just to name a few). There are fragments of a million good movies in here, mixed up togther into a mosaic that almost, but not quite, achieves greatness. " [More]
