Directed by Isao Takahata.
Grave of the Fireflies opens on an evening in 1945, after Japan's surrender at the end of World War II; and in a train station, the young Seita dies alone. The rest of the movie tells us, in flashback, how things have come to this. Seita and Setsuko are two young Japanese children growing up in the waning days of World War II. Much to Seita's pride, their father is in the Japanese navy, and they live fairly content lives in Kobe despite rationing and the other privations of war. When their mother dies from burns suffered during an American fire-bombing raid, a distant aunt takes them in -- and conflict eventually forces the children to try to survive on their own. At first, Seita and his little sister enjoy their idyllic lives in the country, but harsh reality eventually settles in as Seita begins to understand the difficulties of taking care of a young child when both food and compassion are scarce. ~ Emru Townsend, All Movie Guide

"Are You Serious What gave you the impression that this was the "Citizen Kane" of anime? I would have thought a better candidate would be something like Akira or Ghost in the Shell. Or maybe Grave of the Fireflies. Or anything by Miyazaki. As far as anime series go though, I think Cowboy Bebop might be assigned that title. This has to be one of the best anime no movies ever made how could you not feel for this movie. From the first scene you know what happens to them and over the course of the movie you're routing for them and at the end you are slackjawed and shocked at what you have seen i mean any disney movies have that kind of emotion any that can come even close YEAH RIGHT!!! "So, what are some of the saddest anime you've seen? I think Grave of the Fireflies is going to be a given here, but what other anime makes you sad? Some of the sadder ones I've seen are Fullmetal Alchemist and Wolf's Rain. Cowboy BeBop gets pretty depressing towards the end, and Paradise Kiss has a really sad ending too. Personally, I like watching sad anime better than comedies (even though the comedies are still very good and entertaining), just because their plots always seem a lot deeper, and it's easier to get caught up in them and relate to their emotions. So, what do you guys think? " [More]

"Grave of the Fireflies is a poignant anime movie set during the last harrowing days of World War Two in Japan. The movie begins with Seita, the main character of this tragedy, dying and telling us of the days before his death. Even with such a simple plot, this movie is amazing, with great, detailed animation and complex characters. Amazingly, this animated movie of the pains and horrors of war seen through the young eyes of two orphans- Seita and his little sister, Setsuko -who are trying to survive their dangerous environment is told excellently with an anti-war message that makes it probably one of the best anti-war films made. It doesn't look at the soldiers fighting or war and it's ideals and politics; it casts all that away to look at something much more simple and moving: how inevitable human conflict affects people, their lives, and their feelings, particularly children and the innocence they lose. And while some scenes to me seemed to be a little overly emotional, ... " [More]

"Despite being a major lover of Japanese things, I actually don't like most Anime I've seen. These are the anime I like:Genshiken - I love this reality based anime, although, it does kind of drift into too much fanservice in later episodes. His and Her Circumstances - at least the first 10 episodes are genius. It falls apart in a big way midway through its run, but the poor quality of the latter episodes does not detract from how good the first episodes are! Seriously, that is it. I have tried many others and always wind up disappointed. I don't like mechs, violence, monsters of the week, androids or fanservice. I just like the reality based Anime, of which unfortunately very few seem to have been made. I think of Ghibli as a different category from Anime. Of their films I most like:Kiki's Delivery ServiceMy Neighbor TotoroSpirited AwayNausicaa of the Valley of the Wind Grave of the Fireflies " [More]

"I have tried but I can't get into anime either. I heard how Grave of the Fireflies was the greatest movie ever but I found it to be typical anime - lots of cheesy music, closeups of giant-eyed innocents, and voice acting that includes a lot of breathless ooohs and aahs but very little real emotion behind the voices. Everybody also falls all over themselves with Miyazaki, but I almost feel like his imagination needs some restraint. I don't know that much about the references to Japanese culture that he makes and it just feels like I'm watching a world where the plot can go in any direction at anytime. Now that makes for a very visually exciting cartoon, but there needs to be an established logic within the films universe and I just don't get it.The only anime I have really liked are two that transcend their cartoon origins - Akira and Ghost in the Shell (I also liked some of Ninja Scroll). Admittedly these are both action anime and maybe my biggest problem with othe ... " [More]

"Hey everyone! My name is Emma, I'm 15, currently a sophmore in highschool. I found out about spout from my dad, ChangeWarrior . I'm not a huge movie fan or anything, just an anime fanatic. My favorite non-anime movies would be Spider-man and Spider-man 2. I'm very excited about the release of the third movie, I've already ordered tickets for the midnight showing the day it comes out. My favorite movie ever is Grave of the Fireflies. I spend most of my free time watching anime, making cosplay, going to conventions, and doing other anime-related things. ... "+1 I have friends that have been in Anime since the late 1980's. One of them got it shipped to him monthly from Japan since a close friend of his lived there. No subtitles or dubs. Just as they were intended. The adult stuff is WAY OVER the top as well. I still have nightmares of it. " [More]

With very little in the way of action or combat scenes, Grave of the Fireflies is easily one of the most harrowing and riveting war movies ever made. Based on Akiyuki Nosaka's semi-autobiographical novel of the same name, Grave of the Fireflies is an examination of the horrors that war can inflict, even far away from the battles between soldiers. At the same time, it's a heartfelt look at a bond between a brother and sister that can't be broken, even by death. Like Keiji Nakazawa's autobiographical Barefoot Gen, Grave of the Fireflies is remarkable in that it clearly and sympathetically presents the victims of American actions on Japanese civilians, yet never veers into finger-pointing or national shame. Rather, the movie is an indictment of selfish civilian behavior during wartime, and an admonishment against the wars that create these conditions in the first place. It's interesting to note that in Japan, the movie was originally double-billed with Hayao Miyazaki's postwar fable My Neighbor Totoro. ~ Emru Townsend, All Movie Guide
