Ethiopian-born, Washington, D.C., based director Haile Gerima explores European colonialism from an African perspective, focusing on Ethiopia's legendary victory over a European power at the battle of Adwa in 1896. Led by Emperor Menelik and Empress Taitu along with a loose confederation of tribal kings, Ethiopia managed to thwart Italy's colonial ambitions armed only with lances and spears. This film was screened at the 1999 Venice Film Festival. ~ Jonathan Crow, All Movie Guide
