Directed by Richard Donner.
Leonard Maltin wasn't alone when he noticed similarities between Goonies and the 1934 Our Gang comedy Mama's Little Pirate. Adapted by Chris Columbus from a story by Steven Spielberg, the film follows a group of misfit kids (including such second-generation Hollywoodites as Josh Brolin and Sean Astin) as they search for buried treasure in a subterranean cavern. Here they cross the path of lady criminal Mama Fratelli (Anne Ramsey) and her outlaw brood. Fortunately, the kids manage to befriend Fratelli's hideously deformed (but soft-hearted) son (John Matuszak), who comes to their rescue. The Spielberg influence is most pronounced in the film's prologue and epilogue, when the viewer is advised that the film's real villains are a group of "Evil Land Developers." The musical score makes excellent use of Max Steiner's main theme from The Adventures of Don Juan, not to mention contributions by the likes of Richard Marx and Cyndi Lauper. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

"I’m sure that David Wain was just joking when he told MTV Movie’s Blog that there’s been talk of a musical adaptation of Wet Hot American Summer. But that hasn’t stopped me from thinking about it in depth. At first I was really excited. From the very beginning I’ve loved both the movie and its soundtrack (which I had to hand craft, since an actual WHAS album doesn’t exist) and would definitely be interested in seeing the whole thing acted out on stage. But now I’m realizing its a bad idea, and I’ve included that van crash scene as a metaphor for the concept. Sure, I would love to see the movie acted out on stage, but in the same way I loved watching my buddy play “Data” in an off-Broadway musical version of The Goonies. And in the same way I’d love to see the Con Air and Mystic Pizza musicals starring the fictional Jenna Maroney (winner of a NYC film critics award for Best Actress in a Movie Based on a Musical Based on a Movie). But is it something I can see really being any good? ... " [More]

"Mick LaSalle asked us last week what movie we would like to be inside (instead of Beowulf, which we can sort of feel like we’re in). Personally, I think being inside The Wizard of Oz would be awful. I might even prefer The Wiz, and I’d hate to be in The Wiz. I’d even prefer to hang out with Fred Savage in The Wizard, and I don’t play video games. My answers: anything Capra (well, almost anything — no Why We Fight docs); anything Marx Brothers; anything Muppets; anything Miyazaki; Amelie; Close Encounters of the Third Kind; The Goonies (why not?); and What Dreams May Come (the movie was bad; the setting was beautiful). In honor of me writing more about Enchanted than Karina ever would dream of, I present Rob’s review from his I don’t like Renee Zellweger blog, to show I’m not the only blogger addressing such mainstream fare. Like me, Rob found the movie to be “uninspired,” though he was apparently “disappointed” (I had a low expectation to begin with) and even notes that Amy Adams m ... " [More]

"I'm really surprised this film has endured all the years. A childhood favorite (which looks way better now that I can see the Panoramic widescreen version), there's barely a plot, the direction seems slapdash and pedestrian at times, let alone a cohesive script, for that matter (the kids seem to be ad-libbing most of the time), but therein lies it's appeal - it's a fun adventure film with "real" dialogue by the cast of "real" kids. You've got high-energy and campy humor (due in part to the terribly dated SFX) - it's the perfect, quaint 'time capsule' film. Hmph, I don't know - maybe I'm being nostalgic, but it's definitely one of those movies you put in on a rainy day (like today!) and pass out on the couch to. " [More]

"They Might Be Giants is definitely my favorite band of all time! I have like 40 hours worth of their music on my iPod I think. Yet I still haven't seen the movie!!! I'm actually gearing up to though. I've been reading some Sherlock Holmes, and I think I'd like to read Don Quixote first. I was actually looking around about this today. Does anyone have a suggestion for the best English translation? Some of my other favorites from that link are Mr. Bungle, Man or Astro-Man?, and Cornelius. The Wu-Tang clan obviously comes from all of those Wu-Tang Kung-Fu movies.I'm assuming Adam Ant is a derivative of the Atom Ant cartoon show.Urusei Yatsura is taken directly from the title of an anime.I swear the I read The Avalanches were named after a quote from some movie. They use the quote in the song Frontier Psychiatrist. There's a rumor that The Fratellis were named after the characters in Goonies, but I guess that isn't true. And you should all check out this ... "I've been tagged by FilmSnob to participate in the Eight Things meme that's been going around. All the cool kids are doing it, and it's Friday, so why the hell not? But in the interest of keeping things around here *somewhat* on topic, I will try to keep this semi-film related. First, the rules: Rules: 1. We have to post these rules before we give you the facts. 2. Players start with eight random facts/habits about themselves. 3. People who are tagged write their own blog post about their eight things and include these rules. 4. At the end of your blog, you need to choose eight people to get tagged and list their names. Don’t forget to leave them a comment telling them they’re tagged and that they should read your blog. Now, the things: 1) I have never seen the following films: Gone with the Wind, Lawrence of Arabia, The Goonies or Gremlins. 2)When I first moved to New York, I was broke, working full time and going to school at night. I came up with a crack-pot scheme to tr ... " [More]

For many moviegoers, The Goonies epitomizes the '80s family action-adventure. Steven Spielberg assumes the reins as producer in this big-budget effort, enlisting seasoned action-director Richard Donner (Superman) to direct and blossoming screenwriter Chris Columbus (Gremlins) to pen the script. This able trio certainly understands what young audiences want to see, thus fill their narrative with special effects, pirate's treasure, epic sets, and curmudgeonly crooks. The result is a mélange of memorable moments equally thrilling for both adults and children. From the opening jailbreak scene to the wild water slide ride through one-eyed Willie's booby-trapped caverns, this is a relentless, high-octane "Spielbergian" journey starring young protagonists. Although the characters are built on obvious clichés (i.e. the whining fat kid, the homecoming queen, the Asian kid with gadgets), the charming performances and quirky dialogue manage to bring these seemingly stale archetypes to life. This is a film that never talks down to its young audience, creating intelligent teen characters that feel real emotions and face internal and external conflict from all sides. While many consider this film nothing more than a busy and overproduced grab bag of Hollywood hack, others can look back on The Goonies nostalgically. Sloth's drooling shrieks of "BABY RUTH" and "HEY YOU GUYS" may seem a tad trite and corny by today's standards, but these moments are as famous as any other '80s celluloid classics. A string of unimpressive children's adventures such as Russkies would soon follow the release of The Goonies, but the canned plot lines and cardboard characters lacked the heart of Mikey, Mouth, Data, and their colorful cohorts. ~ Adam Goldberg, All Movie Guide
