Directed by Stephen Frears.
A man discovers that there's more to love than a good mixed tape in this dramatic comedy about music and relationships. Rob (John Cusack), an obsessive record collector in his mid-thirties, is struggling to reconcile his adolescent enthusiasm for pop music with adult responsibilities and a more mature outlook. He runs a record shop with his friends Barry (Jack Black) and Dick (Todd Louiso), who are known to drive away customers whose taste in music doesn't match their exacting standards -- which may have something to do with why the shop is losing money. But Rob's biggest problem is his failing relationship with Laura (Iben Hjejle), a lawyer who needs more out of the relationship than Rob is capable of giving. To Rob's horror, Laura starts dating Ian (Tim Robbins), his upstairs neighbor, known throughout the building for his long and noisy sex sessions. Rob, on the other hand, finds himself catching the attention of singer/songwriter Marie DeSalle (Lisa Bonet), as he tries to deal with his breakup by tracking down his previous ex-girlfriends and taking a fresh look at what he's been doing wrong. Based on the acclaimed novel by Nick Hornby, High Fidelity also features Catherine Zeta-Jones, Lili Taylor, and Joelle Carter as three of Rob's ex-lovers, and Sara Gilbert as Dick's new girlfriend, who gets a crash course in U.K. punk bands that influenced Green Day. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

"This is nothing like my top ten of 2007. I don’t not do top ten lists because I think they’re stupid, pointless or pretentious. I don’t do them because I never see enough films in the year to feel I’m adequately representing what is the best of the year. I don’t even feel I could represent my favorite of the year, since later on I’ll likely see some great films from this year that would qualify as my favorite(s). So, I’m just going to present some movies (or parts of movies) I really loved this year, and tell you what I loved about them. Because to me best of lists are merely a reminder of movies I still need to see, consider this a list only of things you might have missed and should definitely check out. Sunshine and The Last Winter - Two incredible science fiction stories that each ends rather disappointingly. Fortunately both are good enough until their denouements that they are completely recommendable to serious sci-fi fans and anybody else who wants to spark up some discuss ... " [More]

"Almost Famous - Philip Seymour Hoffman, explaining the relation of the music geek/journalist to the bands they revere is the moment that this film grows from an excellent comming-of-age story in to a profound and incrediby insightful examination of pop music, people who make pop music, and people who love pop music. Heartworn Highways - Country music was the original punk rock. it was honesty, gritty, rebellious, and aimed at the lowly. Then, it became the most commercially consistent and artistictically-lifeless genre of music not sung by earnest teenage boys. However, country as country was still exists. Rebranned as Americana or another half-dozen other names, there is a thriving community of artists blending folk, Hank Williams era country, and Buddy Holly era rock'n'roll, in to music too twangy for most, and too honest for CMT. This film follows some of the first, and some of the best, very early in their careers. If Townes Van Zandt's sing-along with his elderly ... " [More]

"High Fidelity (2000) is a superbly made movie—wonderful direction (Stephen Frears), excellent pace, editing that matches the subject matter, top-notch acting, and a couple of messages wrapped in wry comedy. I enjoyed it as much as the first time I saw it when it came out. That said, it focuses relentlessly on a topic that might not be appealing to a lot of people, and is less and less interesting to me: a thirty-something guy who won’t grow up in his relationships with women or his career. Furthermore, the messages aren’t as profound as I thought they were years ago. One: With women, you should think of what they might want rather than doing whatever is necessary to get them into bed and make yourself happy. Not that profound. Two: It is better to be a productive participant than a side-line critic. This is a more thought-provoking theme. But “criticism”, which Matthew Arnold maintained could be one of the most important things in a healthy society, do ... " [More]

"Ok, my top five "all-time" favorite soundtracks would have to be:High Fidelity - The reasons are obvious to anyone who loves this film. I mean where else can you get a compilation like this? It feels as intimate as a cassette tape made for you by your high school sweetheart.Phenomenon - This one is included for The Iguanas version of Para Donde Vas (the Eric Clapton I could do without)...Garden State - Beautifully dreary, just like the movie.High Art - Just perfection...Shudder to Think are geniuses.Wicker Park - Unlike the movie, I can experience the soundtrack over and over forever.Gossip - Ok, ok...so this is supposed to be limited to five, but the soundtrack was never released -- which I consider to be a serious crime! I even tried to collect the songs from the movie, but, alas, since most of them are obscure artists, it was impossible. This would be my number one favorite...if only it existed! " [More]

"1. Shrek - Yeah this and all those other family oriented, 3-D CGI Dreamworks/Pixar kind of deals. I actually haven't seen most of these types of movies in their entirety. Gave up after the first generation of them, but they only seem to be the same crap. Maybe I'm hardhearted, but this stuff just isn't funny to me. The movies are the most annoying of all the huge corporate francises. I have to see these characters in every kind of sick ad for products I would have never even wanted to hear about in the first place. The messages they deliver are trite platitudes. And most of them are just big music videos for annoying bands like Smashmouth doing remakes of The Monkees. Uuuugh. And it's all this politically correct new-age shit. Let's not speak of that anymore.2. Crash / Million Dollar Baby - two recent Oscar winners both written by that hack Paul Haggis. These movies are manipulative in the worst way. I call these movies where I can feel the writer ... " [More]

"1. Almost Famous (2000) - I know a lot of people who dismiss this film, but It's one of my favorites. I truly captures the spirit of the era. 2. Nashville (1975) - An epic, sprawling masterpiece. One of Altman's finest achievements. 3. This Is Spinal Tap (1984) - What more should be said. Fantastic music & possible the funniest movies of all time.4. High Fidelity (2000) - Frears & company perfectly capture the spirit of the book. Made the whole Top 5 list process even more relevant.5. A Hard Day's Night (1964) - Obviously the songs are amazing, but this is one of the most fun films you could ever see.Runners Up:The Red ShoesFive Easy Pieces Amadeus " [More]

"It's weird to imagine if they are all from different eras.Gondorf and Hooker are pulling a big one over on Lonnegan. Dr. Richard Kimble is on the run from a U.S. Marshal. The McAllister family is flying out of O'Hare minus one member. Bill is working his last day at the steel-mill. Rob Gordon is making another stupid list and whining about his life. Satan is giving a bus tour of the St. Valintine's Day Massacre. Wayne and Garth are headbanging. "Rocket" Steadman is sucking it up like usual. Tom Stansfield is chasing an owl named O.J. in the year 2003. A baby carriage falls down the stairs. William Gates fucks up his knee. " [More]

"I don'g get it. How do some actors end up playing roles in certain movies. You know what I am talking about. Like when Owen Wilson shows up in Behind Enemy Lines as a pilot...Sometimes these performances turn out ok and sometimes you just dont understand how an actor who was so good in a different movie could manage to be so bad in this one.Im gonna make a list of what I mean:John Cusak: This guy might be the king of this genre for me. I just dont get how he could be so brilliant in movies like High Fidelity and Say Anything but SO horrible in movies like Identity. Seriously...that movie is BAD.Owen Wilson: As mentioned before, this guy is similar but the opposite of John Cusak in that he has been the only redeeming part of MANY of the non-Wes Anderson movies that he has been in such as Behind Enemy Lines. Seriously...how does your career survive being in movies like You Me and Dupree and The Big Bounce? TERRIBLE!Ashton Kutcher: this guy seems like a tool to me. He is so ... " [More]

"Swingers's detail pageI thought I wouldn't like participating in this group at first because it get's frustrating complaining about movies, but I can't seem to hold myself back. Puhnner, you asked me to list some of my overrated movies, referring to my definition of overrated by ratio. Well I'm not sure if this is going by the same criteria, but I've come up with a list from another source. I also rate movies at the website movielens. It will give you recommendations based on your ratings and whatnot. It also gives some interesting statistics. For one, it tells me which movies I have rated the lowest compared to the average rating on their site. So I have looked at that list and picked several of them. The thing about this method is that I am not using what my impression of the ammount of acclaim a movie has received for the ratio but rather what the ammount of acclaim a website thinks a movie has based on the votes from it's users. At face value, High Fidelity looks like a movie about the girl troubles of a 30-something record collector obsessing over his most recent breakup, but just below the surface is a witty but knowing story about a man slowly waking up to the fact that he's been emotionally stuck in adolescence and realizes it's time to start acting like an adult (which means accepting the knowledge that there's more to know about his partner than what records she likes). Nick Hornby's original novel was a clever, slyly intelligent book about people whose lives have been both shaped and reflected by popular culture, and director Stephen Frears and producer/co-screenwriter/leading man John Cusack have more than honored their source material. While one doesn't have to be a music buff to enjoy the movie, they've packed the film with enough knowing musical references to satisfy even the most jaded hipster; anyone who has spent much time in a used record store will feel right at home at Rob's shop, Championship Vinyl. And though Cusack's performance -- funny and charming but with enough bile to give him a few sharp edges -- dominates the film, Frears is more than generous with the supporting cast, especially Jack Black and Todd Louiso, who, as Barry and Dick, hilariously play id and superego to Rob's barely contained middle ground. Tim Robbins delivers a brief but superb turn as the annoyingly even-tempered Ian, and Iben Hjejle is engaging as Laura, who seems almost too sensible to be living with Rob (though we can certainly see why he wants her around). If High Fidelity sometimes seems to tell viewers more than they might want to know about the obsessions of its characters, Frears and Cusack have also given Rob just enough depth that he seems genuine and believable, and there's a lot to be learned from his struggles with romance and maturity -- even if you don't know (or care) how much a French pressing of Captain Beefheart's Safe As Milk fetches these days. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
