"Danny Boyle’s new crowd-pleasing film Slumdog Millionaire was originally intended to be shot entirely in English, but apparently due to the preferences of a casting director, about a third of the movie is in Hindi. While this fraction may not be enough to call it a foreign-language film, it could have been enough to turn off subtitle-fearing audiences were the movie not so otherwise accessible due to its feel-good, “Hollywood-style” story involving star-crossed romance, destiny and an ultimate “love conquers all” message. Also, the movie breaks free from one off-putting foreign film tradition by following Man on Fire, Night Watch and TV’s Heroes into the realm of non-traditional subtitling. ""You've never seen GoodFellas! How can you call yourself a movie fan and have never see GoodFellas?" I have been these asked question repeatedly over the last eight years and I have always been at a loss for an answer- it was just one of those movies that I had missed several times and could not easily fit into due to its relatively long length (two hours and twenty five minuets). And perhaps part of it was that I was a little afraid I would be disappointed. As I have said before, I like Scorsese, but do believe that the director is overrated. I do not think that GoodFellas is "The best mob movie ever" as Roger Ebert calls it (that would have to go the first two Godfather films) or one of the best films of the 90's, as it is often considered, or even a masterpiece, but I do think that it's a very good film that is among the upper echelons of Scorsese's work, even though it's not in a league with Taxi Driver, Raging Bull or The Aviator. "Doing to some slight research into the most recent DVD screener I received from Spout, The Man of the Year, I felt there might be some promise. Alas, this was one of the worst I've seen in a while.I watched the trailer for the movie which was on the DVD as well after I had finished. It featured a quote from who knows where stating "If Quentin Tarantino had been Brazillian". I'm not sure what the second part of this sentence was because the trailer failed to let us know. But I tried to think of a number of possibilities. One of the simplest ones probably would have been, "he would have made a movie that looked nothing like this one." Really this movie has none of the wit or enjoyable dialogue that you would find in a Tarantino movie.For another comparison, I saw a quote from a review by Phil Villarreal from the Arizona Daily Star. He says "If 'City of God' is Brazil's answer to 'The Godfather,' then 'The Man of the Year' is Rio's 'G ... "

"I saw Goodfellas 4 days ago already, but I kept putting off writing about it. Why? Well...I'm afraid I'm going to blaspheme.Oh, not blaspheme in the "fucking show yourself, you goddamn bloodsucker" way I was talking to the hiding mosquito in my room on my hunt after the movie, infected by the language. No, blaspheme as in: I didn't really like it all that much.Oh, Scorses is definitely a master filmmaker, so I did find much to admire: there are some breathtaking tracking shots, the dialogue snaps like it should, basically every technical aspect is perfect. Somehow, though, I was unaffected.One thing might be that it's long, and that I didn't find the story particularly engaging or suspenseful. To put it crudely, I didn't really care who lived or died. It might be that I found the switching between the perspective of the voice-over from Henry to Karen and back distracting and unnecessary. "WOW ! this film packs a wallop and each actor in the movie contributes to its perfection. I grew up in Little Italy, NYC (so did Scorsese) and this movie captures the wiseguy and mafia -hoodlum -wanna be attitude of many of the fellas in the hood . So well done.!! "

"17 years later this movie is still one that I would prefer to watch over any of the same old blockbuster busts of today. Along the lines of The Godfather, Scorsese takes you inside the Mob and gives you a detailed look at how the Italian Mafia lived. With Liotta giving a great narration during the film, Goodfellas takes you on a story you dont want to end. Plus here is a tip to directors: Cast real Italian actors, as Scorsese did, if you are going to do a Mob movie! Bracco, De Niro, Liotta, Pesci, and Sorvino baby the FAB 5. Battles with Godfather p1 as the best mob movie ever! "

"Moved from one Scorcese oddity the other night (The Color of Money), to another yesterday evening with this period piece. You can still see what drew him to the material - New York of the 1870s, betrayals and intrigue - almost a gentrified version of Goodfellas, where instead of getting 'wacked' you become a social outcast, excluded from invitations, gossiped about in smoking rooms, if you dare cross the line of honor and expected behavior. The opening 'ballroom' scene even reminded me a bit of the 'barroom introduction scene' in Goodfellas where the camera insinuates itself among the guests giving you little snippets of information about various characters.Newland (Daniel Day-Lewis) is such a wishy washy character to be put in the role of doomed lover, he secretly disapproves of the stiff conformity of his peers, yet never dares break from it completely, he longs for forbidden romance, yet can barely bring himself to make even the slightest moves towards ob ... "After enjoying 'The Departed' a couple months ago, I've been revisiting a lot of old favorite Scorcese films. I hadn't seen 'Raging Bull' in probably 10 or more years, and it has only gotten better with age. This is probably one of three of his films he should have won the oscar for ('Taxi Driver' and 'Goodfellas' are the other two), instead of Hollywood scrambling to give him one late in his career as a consolation prize for ignoring him so long. After the dreamlike credits and short intro backstage with LaMotta's lounge act, the movie jumps right out of the corner at you, both fists a swinging, and the opening sequence is a perfect blend of top notch editing, cinematography and timing as the violence in the ring seems to infect and spread throughout the audience until the capping scene with the entire arena broken out into a riot and the poor organist in the foreground trying vainly to calm people down.
