With Goldfinger, the James Bond series took a turn away from relatively straightforward spy thrillers and toward campy gadgetry, extravagant sets, and kitschy jokes. Bond (Sean Connery) has to prevent a notorious gold smuggler, appropriately named Goldfinger (Gert Fröbe), from robbing Fort Knox. Goldfinger is surrounded by evil henchmen such as the sexy female pilot Pussy Galore (Honor Blackman) and Oddjob (Harold Sakata), who kills with his steel-rimmed bowler hats. In order to stop Goldfinger, Bond has to survive several perilous situations, including a huge, deadly laser. Goldfinger is one of the most popular films in the James Bond series, and it set the tone not only for the rest of the series but also for most of the action/adventure films of the late '60s and early '70s. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Movie Guide

"What's left to say about Goldfinger. Without a doubt it's the best of the Connery-films and a strong contender for best Bond-film of all time. All the ingredients are there and they all work. There's a Bond-girl named Pussy Galore (I love how Connery pronounces it "Poohsy"), a great villain with a cool evil scheme, a classic opening title track, Connery wearing that fabulous grey suit and much more. "1. The Misfits: A devastating film with the last performances from Marilyn Monroe, Clark Gabe, and Montgomery Clift. One of John Huston's best films, and for some reason, a completely underrated and under-seen film. The band is a fantastic Horror-Rock/Punk band.2. Godfinger: The third and possibly best film in the Bond series (Casino Royal has made me reconsider this statement). Everything that made me love the bond films as a kid can be found here. 3. They Might Be Giants is a very cool modern day take on Sherlock Holmes. George C. Scott (as aways), gives a great performance. 4. Black Sabbath: I love Boris Karloff films, even when they are bad. This is one of his better non Universal Monster series films. I think we all know the band.5. HONEYMOON KILLERS: A very good and very disturbing 1970's film about a newly married couple who enjoy a little killing now and then. "I haven't seen any signs of recent life on this board, but will throw out a suggestion... RANK THE BOND FILMS. Against each other, of course, not necessarily individual ratings. A friend of mine challenged me to re-watch them chronologically and as quickly as possible. We each made our own notes along the way and ranked them. The ranking below was created prior to DIE ANOTHER DAY, so I need to consider where it fits in. I will tell you exactly where CASINO ROYALE fits in (see below). This is all very subjective, but I'd be interested to see other's thoughts. For example, do you loathe YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE because of its finale or do you forgive that portion and rank it higher? "I am with you on the whole list except for #1 - I really enjoy the idea of updating Bond to compete with the more successful Jason Bourne and Ethan Hunt franchises. Bond is supposed to be suave, but it got to be a joke with the Roger Moore and the post-Goldeneye Pierce Brosnan films' cheesiness. Bond had to be a badass to get his 007 certification and this last film was really well done (still not as good as The Bourne Supremacy though). Looking back at the revered series I personally only like a handful of the films and I only think two are top notch in writing and directing for action thrillers- Goldfinger and On Her Majesty's Secret Service. I think this last one is the sign of better things to come. You are right about the Indiana Jones series ending perfectly - I just don't know how they can satisfy their audience with a fourth. "Although I’d seen the majority of the James Bond films a long time ago, I’d missed Goldfinger (1964). Although I appreciated the slow, more natural pace of the film, and although I appreciated being able to hear the dialogue, I really objected to the phoney sexism at the heart of the film. Bond is neither a strong man nor a great martial arts fighter. Nor, in this movie, is he particularly clever—he is held captive for a good chunk of the film. His two talents are booze and broads. While we only get whiffs of his alcohol expertise, we see him have instant seductive powers on a variety of women who are one-dimensional bimbos. I expected to watch the movie for some brainless entertainment, but this went too far. " [More]

"I have to admit, I have been away from the Bond franchise for some time. The last one I saw was 'Goldeneye', and while I thought it was a cut above the previous few entries, I was getting a little tired of the concept, thinking "how long can they keep milking this?" -- Well we had heard that this new Bond Daniel Craig was worth a look, so we ventured out to our local multiplex to check him out around December. Additionally, the 'Encore' channel started running all the old Bonds around the New Year (and if you got the 'on demand' option with your cable service, you could watch all of them at your leisure in widescreen no less!), so around here, we've been thoroughly drenched in Bond for the past few months. This weekend, we were snowed in and watched one of the more recent Pierce Brosnan entries, so with all this is mind, I thought I'd do an overview of the 007 pantheon (at least the ones I've seen, who knows how many times by now).I have to start ... The third film in the remarkably durable franchise, Goldfinger set the gold standard (naturally) for future James Bond adventures. With the films' signature elements firmly entrenched -- including globe-trotting story, salacious credits sequence, Q's exasperation, and 007's phenomenal abilities with women and antagonists -- Goldfinger began to up the ante. Bond's well-equipped Aston-Martin and Goldfinger's elaborate Fort Knox model presaged future technical extravagance, while Bond's near castration via a giant laser was one more sign of the series' humorous self-awareness. Loquacious villain Auric Goldfinger, lethally hat-throwing Oddjob, and inimitably named Bond girl Pussy Galore were already outrageously tongue-in-cheek baddies long before Mike Myers parodied them in Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery (1997). Dispatching enemies, making puns, and seducing females with equal aplomb, tough-yet-debonair Sean Connery gracefully walked the line between straight-up action hero and sly burlesque, offering further evidence as to why he would be the definitive 007.
