Francis Ford Coppola's legendary continuation and sequel to his landmark 1972 film, The Godfather, parallels the young Vito Corleone's rise with his son Michael's spiritual fall, deepening The Godfather's depiction of the dark side of the American dream. In the early 1900s, the child Vito flees his Sicilian village for America after the local Mafia kills his family. Vito (Robert De Niro) struggles to make a living, legally or illegally, for his wife and growing brood in Little Italy, killing the local Black Hand Fanucci (Gastone Moschin) after he demands his customary cut of the tyro's business. With Fanucci gone, Vito's communal stature grows, but it is his family (past and present) who matters most to him -- a familial legacy then upended by Michael's (Al Pacino) business expansion in the 1950s. Now based in Lake Tahoe, Michael conspires to make inroads in Las Vegas and Havana pleasure industries by any means necessary. As he realizes that allies like Hyman Roth (Lee Strasberg) are trying to kill him, the increasingly paranoid Michael also discovers that his ambition has crippled his marriage to Kay (Diane Keaton) and turned his brother, Fredo (John Cazale), against him. "The sequel to Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle opens in theaters today, and you can read my SXSW review of the movie, titled Harold and Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay, over here. Though I enjoyed it, H&K2 disappointed me for taking on too much plot. But apparently some other reviews are favoring the second installment, and according to Craig Phillips at Green Cine, the matter has critics divided. Phillips, who marginally prefers the sequel, uses the opportunity to revisit those sequels that improved upon the original. Obviously, the list includes The Empire Strikes Back, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and The Road Warrior. However, surprisingly, The Godfather Part II is not in the top ten, because he considers the first and second films tied, and he claims both Terminator 2: Judgment Day and Gremlins 2: The New Batch are only honorable mentions, because their definite superiority is up for debate (true, I’ve never been able to decide if I like them better than their respectiv ... "…of my list. I’m keeping the blurbs short on this one. 11. The Godfather Part 1 & 2 As close to perfect as films get. There is not much to be said about these films that hasn’t already been said. Completely timeless classics. 12. The Fisher King Another great Gilliam film. Robin William’s performance is amazing, as are Jeff Bridge’s and Mercedes Ruehl’s. The emotional power of this movie is phenomenal. 13. Children of Men Cuaron’s bleak vision of the future is excellently original. It is a poignant, provocative, and disturbing masterpiece. 14. The Departed I know it’s a little bit sloppy, but it’s just so fricken cool. The superb performances by the entire cast perfectly portray Monahan’s razor sharp script. 15. "Yesterday, in response to David Gordon Green’s talent being (presumably) wasted on Pineapple Express, I brought you my picks for the 5 worst directorial sellouts of all time (or, as I should have titled it, 5 Worst Attempts at Mainstream Success). And now, as promised, are my picks for the best, because occasionally a great filmmaker can take a seemingly sellout gig and deliver a masterpiece. (tie) The Godfather (1972) and The Godfather Part II (1974) - Everyone should know that Francis Ford Coppola didn’t want to make the first Godfather film. He wanted to make smaller movies, such as The Conversation, which he was able to make at Paramount only because he directed The Godfather and The Godfather Part II. "Villains are oftentimes more interesting than heroes. So, it isn’t surprising when a villain becomes popular enough to warrant his or her own comic/movie/book/etc. The latest, according to IESB, will be Venom, one of the three villains featured in the horrible superhero sequel Spider-Man 3. For Marvel Comics readers, this isn’t that shocking. Venom received his own comic titles long ago, and disappointingly turned semi-good-guy vigilante. But will the movie spin-off be the same kind of water-down? If we look at the two ways a villain spin-off typically goes, it’s probable. First, there’s the villain origin piece, which includes movies like Hannibal Rising, The Scorpion King, Wicked, the upcoming X-Men Origins: Magneto and of course the Star Wars prequels. They attempt to show how the evolution of a wronged person who becomes the iconic villain we’re familiar with. "Some consider this the only sequel that was ever better than the original. I wouldn’t get into too much of an argument about the issue to be honest. But the flashing back & forth and the presence of a lot of Italian dialogue take this one down a notch for me. Plus it’s missing Abe Vigoda. Hey, it’s still in my Top 10 though. " [More]

"I first considered myself at a disadvantage to comment upon a filmed version of 'The Great Gatsby,' being that I hadn't read the book for years, and even then, I really wasn't old or experienced enough to really appreciate it. But this is instead the best way to approach a film adaptation of a novel - if you have no prejudices based on another incarnation, you can be free to interpret the material fresh.I last saw the 1974 film version of 'The Great Gatsby' at the same time I read the novel - roughly 15 years ago when I was in high school. At that time, I can't remember the film making much impression on me, other than seeing a parallel to the character Robert Redford played in 'Indecent Proposal.' "The movies in our DVD collection can be broadly categorized like this:Ones that we, and particularly Anne-Marie, will watch pretty casually. These tend to be films that are simply “watchable,” that we are already pretty familiar with, and/or can be watched for individual moments. Examples of these films include Dazed and Confused (1993), 10 Things I Hate About You (1999), and L.A. "What about Michael Corleone???? How often do sequels get Best Picture Oscars? It may be cliche, but The Godfather Part II is beyond words one of the best movies ever, one of the best sequels ever, and one of the best performances ever by Al. However, despite that, my two personal favorites aside from the norm and traditional are Scent of a Woman and Heat. Heat probably worked because his nemesis was Bobby, and they were excellent foils (and formerly godfathers), but who can underestimate his extremely nuanced performance as the Colonel in Scent of a Woman (despite or maybe because of the hoo-ah)? Both sequel and prequel to The Godfather (1972), Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather, Part II (1974) delves further into the dark side of the capitalist American dream by paralleling the young Vito Corleone's 1910s rise with his son Michael's 1950s spiritual fall. To create a more contemplative view of the Corleones' American success story, Coppola cross-cut between Vito's story (in subtitled Italian) and Michael's, revealing how the honorable aim of protecting the family degenerates into an excuse for wielding lethal power, for the sake only of business. Images of Vito's parental concern and immigrant neighborhood dealings dissolve to Michael's familial disintegration and U.S. Senate subterfuge. Cinematographer Gordon Willis' warm sepia tones for the Vito sequences recall period photographs, contrasting sharply with the crass brightness and cold shadows of 1950s Lake Tahoe and Havana. With the memory of The Godfather present in Robert De Niro's uncanny evocation of Marlon Brando and in flashbacks to 1942, Coppola underlines how much The Godfather's potentially alluring myth of family unity begat horrific violence; the film becomes both a critique of responses to the first film that may have glorified its family-oriented violence and a more explicit and mournful allegory of American corporate violence and corruption across the 20th century. These aspects, together with the unique cross-cut narrative, give the movie a richer dimension and a wider scope than the first one's family drama, and it was hailed by most observers as the rare sequel that equaled, or even surpassed, the original.
