Writer/director Paul Thomas Anderson followed his critical and commercial breakthrough Boogie Nights with this wildly ambitious story of lives intertwining on a single day in California's San Fernando Valley. Earl Partridge (Jason Robards), a successful producer of television game shows, left his wife when she contracted cancer to marry the younger and more beautiful Linda (Julianne Moore). Now, Earl has cancer himself, and Linda spends her day fetching medicines and trying to deal with the imminent death of her husband, whom she has only now come to love. Earl asks his nurse Phil (Philip Seymour Hoffman) to arrange a meeting with his estranged son, Frank Mackey (Tom Cruise), known for his self-help program "Seduce and Destroy," in which he preaches the importance of male sexual prowess; he cared for his mother after Earl left her, and he has no desire to see his father again. Earl's best-known show is hosted by Jimmy Gator (Philip Baker Hall), who also learns that he is dying. Jimmy's show pits bright adults against unusually smart kids; one of Jimmy's child contestants, Stanley (Jeremy Blackman), arrives late for a taping after being left stranded by his father Rick (Michael Bowen), who is supported by his more successful son. Meanwhile, Donnie Smith (William H. Macy), who was a champ on Jimmy's show as a child, is not having as much luck as an adult; he's just lost his job and needs to pay for some expensive dental work. Jimmy wants to reconcile with his estranged and emotionally fragile daughter Claudia (Melora Walters), who despises him and who will become involved with well-meaning police officer Jim Kurring (John C. Reilly), who has been desperately lonely since his divorce three years ago. Magnolia reunites much of the cast and crew of Boogie Nights and features eight original songs by singer/songwriter Aimee Mann and a musical score by Jon Brion. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

"Filmspotting said we had 'til wednesday?...oh well just for fun..... I'm in sync with the thought that when weighing the pros and cons it would be much better for the Aliens to stay away, but I also don't want to decieve them. So perhaps we could try something that seems to repel girls away from me....and thus I give you: Philip Seymore Hoffman's It's a Wonderful Life Collection 1. Happiness 2. Boogie Nights 3. Owning Mahowny 4. Love Liza Hey wait where are you going?......I thought you said you wanted to learn about life on earth...... but I haven't shown you Magnolia yet......... It's over 3 hours long...... ........... and it's got FROGS! Cam " [More]

"The alien is trying to answer the question "what is life like on Earth," but the greater question is actually "What does it mean to be human?" How do humans interact, what do they wish/dream for in life, what is life on Earth all about for humans. I chose five films that best represent aspects of the human experience Magnolia- No film better shows a better collection of human relationships. This film answers the many ways humans can come together or break off with each other. Although frogs falling from the sky may confuse our intergalatic friend, he will better understand how humans see each other in one another's eyes. The Seventh Seal- Every human tries to answer the big questions in life. What is my purpose? What happens after death? Is there a God? The Seventh Seal will show the alien how humans confront such a bizarre and strange set of questions. Fargo-Humans are not always good. Fargo best shows the corruption of the human soul through greed and desperation. Although there ... " [More]

"SPOILER ALERT: Don't read if you want to see Magnolia. The most surprising aspect of this movie is how long it takes for the birds to attack. When they finally do, it feels like they're interrupting a movie that would've been perfectly good without them, a complex and suspenseful screwball comedy. Ultimately the thrills of the second act fall short, and not because of cheesy effects. Hitchcock and co. are remarkably resourceful within their technical limitations. No, what makes it fall short is that birds just aren't that scary. M. Knight Shyamalan cites this movie as inspiration for The Happening. There's a thematic connection, but structure-wise a film that's far closer is From Dusk Till Dawn. Both films deliver in the first act and drop the ball when the tone switches. (And Shyamalan's film is inept but comical all the way through.) I think I would like this movie more if it were called Weekend at Bodega Bay; calling the film The Birds is like referring to Magnolia as The Frogs. " [More]

"This blog entry is part of my “movie year countdown round #2”. Read more about that here.Hard EightP.T. Anderson's Magnolia and a Punch-Drunk Love are two of my favorite movies. I also think Boogie Nights is a very good movie, although it doesn't affect me as profoundly as those other two. I just watched Hard Eight, and have yet to see There Will Be Blood. So far my feeling is that each of Anderson's movies have been subsequently better. Hard Eight is a solid movie with good characters and good use of a style that would come to be perfected. Boogie Nights may just not appeal to me as much because I can't get entirely invested into the world of the pornography industry. But it is still well done. Magnolia is simply perfect, and Punch-Drunk Love is somehow even better in it's own way. Due to this trend in my personal enjoyment of his movies and the unbelievable amount of praise I've heard from both the general public, critics, and close frie ... " [More]

"This was a good weekend for me in terms of movies...a few movies were ones that I've been trying to see for weeks but just haven't really gotten around to. However, one was a movie that I just happened to stumble on at my friends house. All of them were pretty good, and they are as follows: The Darjeeling Limited, Gone Baby Gone, Boogie Nights, and Paprika. As a huge Wes Anderson fan, I've been wanting to see The Darjeeling Limited since the day it got into theaters. However, I was a little bit disappointed with the film as a whole. It was obviously a Wes Anderson film, and he didn't really try anything new, and the actual narrative just wasn't nearly as compelling as any of his previous films. The performances are all great, and Adrien Brody adapts very well to Wes Anderson's childish, imaginary world. Because that's the way Anderson seems to view things...however, while this was absolutely perfect for all his other films, it would have been nice ... " [More]

"I thought it was interesting that BuzzFeed posted an unaltered clip from Magnolia as #2 on their list of the 16 Best Tom Cruise Parody Videos. The implication being that Paul Thomas Anderson managed to rope Cruise himself into a meta-parody, years before most of the culture would come around to seeing fervent Scientologist/couch jumper/actor as the easiest of targets. Certainly, there’s a sort of masturbatory preening and Master of the Universe delusion to Cruise’s Magnolia character that seems to come up again in the famed Scientology video (which most of the other clips on the BuzzFeed page directly spoof), but that aspect of Cruise’s persona has only really blossomed in the past few years. Paul Thomas Anderson could very well be a genius, but if he were psychic, I don’t think he ever would have made Magnolia in the first place. The more interesting idea is not that Cruise was parodying himself in Magnolia, but that he’s become a parody of a character that he played nine years ag ... " [More]

Even more audacious than his 1997 breakthrough Boogie Nights, writer/director Paul Thomas Anderson's Magnolia explores nothing less than the uncertainties of life and the vicissitudes of love. Reuniting most of the cast members from Boogie Nights, with the notable additions of Tom Cruise, Jason Robards, and Melinda Dillon, Anderson pays homage to Robert Altman's multicharacter mosaics, delving into the minutiae of fate, coincidence, and the human condition through the chance intersections of ten major characters in one Southern California day. Along with his assured wide-screen compositions and camera movements, Anderson further reveals the cosmic connections between these damaged lives with a boldly poignant Aimee Mann "sing-along" and an appropriately Biblical finale. Though some critics sniffed that it was self-important pap, most were impressed enough by Anderson's intimately epic reach to forgive Magnolia's few flaws, while Cruise's flamboyant turn as sexual guru Frank T. J. Mackey earned the star a Golden Globe award and Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor. Though Cruise's presence was not enough to turn the three hour character study into a blockbuster hit, Magnolia confirmed that Boogie Nights was no artistic fluke, with Anderson once again garnering an Oscar nomination for his intricate screenplay. ~ Lucia Bozzola, All Movie Guide
