Dashiel Hammett's The Glass Key, a tale of big-city political corruption, was first filmed in 1935, with Edward Arnold as a duplicitous political boss and George Raft as his loyal lieutenant. This 1942 remake improves on the original, especially in replacing the stolid Raft with the charismatic Alan Ladd. Brian Donlevy essays the role of the boss, who is determined to back reform candidate Moroni Olsen, despite Ladd's gut feeling that this move is a mistake. Ladd knows that Donlevy is doing a political about-face merely to get in solid with Olsen's pretty daughter Veronica Lake. It is Ladd who is left to clean up the mess when crime lord Joseph Calleila murders Olsen's wastrel son Richard Denning and pins the rap on Donlevy. As Ladd struggles to clear Donlevy's name, he falls in love with Lake--when he's not being pummeled about by Calleila's psychopathic henchman William Bendix. Far less complex than the Dashiel Hammett original (and far less damning of the American political system), The Glass Key further increased the box-office pull of Paramount's new team of Alan Ladd and Veronica Lake. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

"First of all, why is working with someone else's material "in their defense"? :)And also, according to IMDB, even though it's based on a novel, they did write the screenplay. It's definitely not the first time they've written a screenplay based on other material. The Ladykillers based off the original british filmIntolerable Cruelty seems to be based off of someone else's story. I know the screenplay was rewritten and floated around for many years.O Brother, Where Art Thou? from Homer's OdysseyThe Big Lebowski is in many ways a retelling of The Big Sleep (a novel first)Miller's Crossing was taken from the novels of Dashiell Hammett most notably The Glass KeySeveral of their other movies are specific homages to certain other movies or styles or eras of movies " [More]

"The Glass Key (1942) is a film noir mix of politics and the underworld. Paul Madvig (Brian Donlevy) is supporting a candidate for office from his position as a long-time tough guy, and Ed Beaumont (Alan Ladd) is his friend and right-hand man. They run into nothing but trouble as a Senate candidate’s son is murdered, and Paul’s young sister (Bonita Granville) points the finger at Paul, and the Senator’s gorgeous daughter (Veronica Lake) thinks Paul did it also. The only person who thinks Paul innocent is his right-hand man, and, ironically, they have a falling out. This eventually leads to Ed being badly beaten and winding up in the hospital where he is attended by a captivating nurse (Frances Gifford). This Dashiel Hammett story ends with not one but two surprises. Apparently the ending to the movie is a Hollywood cop-out from the ending to the original hard-boiled book. The above story is drastically simplified. One of the problems with the movie is a plethora o ... " [More]
