Directed by David Fincher.
In this darkly comic drama, Edward Norton stars as a depressed young man (named in the credits only as "Narrator") who has become a small cog in the world of big business. He doesn't like his work and gets no sense of reward from it, attempting instead to drown his sorrows by putting together the "perfect" apartment. He can't sleep and feels alienated from the world at large; he's become so desperate to relate to others that he's taken to visiting support groups for patients with terminal diseases so that he'll have people to talk to. One day on a business flight, he discovers Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt), a charming iconoclast who sells soap. Tyler doesn't put much stock in the materialistic world, and he believes that one can learn a great deal through pain, misfortune, and chaos. Tyler cheerfully challenges his new friend to a fight. Our Narrator finds that bare-knuckle brawling makes him feel more alive than he has in years, and soon the two become friends and roommates, meeting informally to fight once a week. As more men join in, the "fight club" becomes an underground sensation, even though it's a closely guarded secret among the participants. (First rule: Don't talk about fight club. Second rule: Don't talk about fight club.) But as our Narrator and Tyler bond through violence, a strange situation becomes more complicated when Tyler becomes involved with Marla (Helena Bonham Carter), whom our Narrator became infatuated with when they were both crashing the support-group circuit. Based on the novel by Chuck Palahniuk, Fight Club was directed by David Fincher, who previously directed Pitt in the thriller Seven. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

"It’s not always worthwhile to jump on rumors like this, but the idea that Brad Pitt could be cast as The Mighty Thor in Marvel’s upcoming movie adaptation (due June 4, 2010) is too good an idea to be left alone. The word comes from Latino Review that Marvel is simply tossing the actor’s name around, though apparently the role hasn’t even been suggested, let alone offered, to Pitt. Unfortunately, it’s hard to imagine that Pitt would be interested in playing a superhero. He’s still a big enough star and a talented enough actor that he might feel he’s above such a thing. However, if he wants to continue making great films like The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, which don’t make him much cash, he’s going to need some mainstream hits, and he could do much worse for a paycheck than wear a cape and helmet and fight evil as the Norse God of Thunder. So, I’ve come up with five reasons for Pitt to grab Thor’s hammer. Hopefully he’ll find the list convincing. Lucrati ... " [More]

"I heard about this movie throughout word of mouth, and my friends told me I just had to see it. I was wondering why people were so in love with this film. It looked like a movie about fighting, and Brad Pitt. Okay. So luckily it was on HBO and I began to watch it. For 1999, it had nice little sequences of CGI, and I noticed how clever the script was. Throughout the movie, you get more into the main character and how his mind set is slowly falling apart. When Helena Bonham Carter came into the film, I started liking it. Ah, she's such a great actor. She does crazy with class. ...if that's possible. She just always does great in a role. So to get to the point, at the end, I was in awe. The movie turned out to be brilliant and the ending made it outstanding. It's always the ending for me that makes me decide whether I loved the film or not. ...And this ending was great. It was quirky and cute. No wonder everyone loves this film. It was done magically and the script was amazing. If you ... " [More]

"

Aren't there any good horror films set during a High School Reunion? Isn't there any way we can get The Breakfast Club to be attacked by zombies, for cryin' out loud?
Oh man! A high school reunion horror movie would be so frickin' cool! For the main character I'm imagining a nerd who was counting on being a late bloomer, but he's more of a never-bloomer...until the pressure of the blood-soaked reunion forces him to become the hero he never thought he could be!
Actually, there is. I haven't seen it yet, but it looks pretty stupid (in the good way). National Lampoon's Class Reunion. In regard to double features, I hate the fact that I moved from the Los Angeles area right before the New Beverly Cinema started doing awesome double features (http://www.newbevcinema.com/c alendar.cfm). If any of you leave near there, check it out. They also get guest directors to come by and plan their own mini-festivals. The only double ... " [More]

"After much deliberation, I have created a comprehensive list of my current 30 favorite movies ever made. I am still debating about it in my head, considering there are still so many more movies that I want to include on it. However, I widdled it down to 30. I'll reveal them periodically over the next few days, with my absolute favorites (1-10) having long explanations, and then after that getting shorter and shorter. Here's numbers 21-30 with brief explanations.21. The Shining Stanley Kubrick's masterpiece of horror is in my humble opinion the scariest film ever made. I have never seen anything that has contained as much suspense and as much sheer terror as this movie. And while I usually don't like the genre a whole lot, I love this movie.22. The 40 Year Old Virgin/Knocked Up There was a tie here, and I figured I could group them together since it's the same crew. Apatow's movies have changed comedy, and both of these films are almost beyond hila ... " [More]

"
I can understand why you would want to make a point if it if you were referring to a suggestion of a director or movie that someone has already named. You did name Fight Club, although I dont' think anyone mentioned David Fincher yet. But you could be guessing that people haven't named him because a lot of people might already consider Fight Club to be his masterpiece and you wanted to refute that. Do you think he has the potential to make a better movie though?I really think that Fincher could create something better....I mean, Fight Club was amazing, I fricken love that movie, but he has the potential to create something better. I mean, Zodiac was very good, and so was Seven, but I still think Fight Club is the best of the bunch. His style is very good, and if I'm not mistaken, I think that Curious Case of Benjamin Button has a lot of promise. " [More]

"Maybe i should seek out the book from which this was adapted to check my theories about what's going on here...Thing is ,i was annoyed at the publicity for this using the violence to sell it...and all the reviewers focusing on it,when the key to the story is really the "self-harm"... Like in "American Psycho" it's ALL in his head. We know that there is no Tyler Durden and indeed there IS no "Fight Club",no undermining of societal vandalism, just vandalism, starting with himself...he's just gone totally nuts..suffering from "hyper-mania", whereby events surrounding him,and the way everyone acts and appear to relate to him, just serve to fuel and endorse the fantasy ...the best evidence for this in the film, i think,is the sequence where he takes multiple plane trips stopping into bars ,and getting knowing looks from guys with plasters on their noses, and he concludes that "Fight Club" has sprung up everywhere across the USA,and he alone is responsible...(sorry if you were all with me ... "A brief, deliberately vague review of 'The Nines' I have always been interested in this philosophical concept, as well as Plato's 'Cave Parable, 'which has been worked into some of my most re-watched cinematic outings of the past few years (The Matrix, Fight Club, Old School -- OK, maybe not that last one).As a writer, I love the kind of Charlie Kauffman-lite vibe this film has going for it, much like 'Stranger Than Fiction,' but I think much more complex. Ryan Reynolds, who I know many are hot-and-cold over, really displays some heretofore untapped range in three separate roles. Hope Davis is always a welcome addition to any film, but --wow -- where did Melissa McCarthy come from? Have not seen an episode of Gilmore Girls, I suppose I am late to the game, but she is amazing in situations that must seem heart-breakingly true to life for her.John August, who previously wrote Go and is a frequent Tim Burton collaborator (Big Fish, Charlie and the Chocola ... "The Underwire points to Barackula, “a short political horror rock musical about young Barack Obama having to stave off a secret society of vampires at Harvard when he was inducted into presidency at the Harvard Law Review in 1990.” The ten minute film is not online yet, but we’ll be first in line for its debut. Speaking musicals that plumb unlikely sources for kitsch, Chuck Palahniuk, David Fincher and Trent Reznor are apparently trying to put together a Broadway show based on Fight Club, to coincide with the film’s ten year anniversary in 2009. American Idol castoffs should start working out now, I guess… Whoops! According to Andy Baio via Steve Bryant, the slow closing of the theatrical to DVD window, of which one benefit is supposedly the reduction of piracy, is actually making piracy worse. Pitchfork’s offers a short review of Kurt Cobain: About A Son, sparked by news that the doc is soon coming to DVD. “So basically what I’m saying is if you want your childhood dreams shattere ... A definitive case of a movie that has yet to find its time, David Fincher's unnerving and cataclysmic look at the male psyche takes no prisoners and makes no apologies, which is precisely why the film is so powerful. A kind of stepchild to Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange in terms of its thematic relevancy and misunderstood nature, Fight Club looks and feels like almost nothing that has preceded it. Brad Pitt, Edward Norton, and Helena Bonham Carter all successfully subvert their onscreen personas, and give fully committed portrayals that never get buried in the film's dazzling set pieces. More than any film of the 1990s, it was hotly debated in terms of its cinematic worth. Some critics deemed it fascist and overheated, condemning the film for its refusal to a create an easily delineated platform on the issues it raises. Others praised the film for this very reason, citing its ability to challenge the minds of moviegoers. The film was a surprising misfire in its initial release, but a legion of die-hard fans subsequently developed. It wouldn't be at all surprising if it goes on to achieve the delayed status of a work such as Blade Runner, another film panned by critics and audiences when it was released that is now viewed as a significantly influential movie and a banner example of film theory on screen. ~ Jason Clark, All Movie Guide
