Premiering with a full-length animated Christmas special in 1989, The Simpsons went on to become one of the most daring network television series of the 1990s, skewering pop culture, politics, and society in general at every opportunity. Anchored by the tales of its five-member, four-fingered, dysfunctional nuclear family, the series grew to provide more and more story lines for its wealth of rich supporting characters. ~ Michael Hastings, All Movie Guide

"When I first saw the trailer for Wanted, I figured it was just another Matrix ripoff. And I’m sure there are many other people who thought the same thing. Of course, some Matrix ripoffs aren’t bad — I absolutely love Kurt Wimmer’s Equilibrium, for example — but most are. Even worse, though, are the parodies of the Matrix’s “bullet time” sequences. Do we really need to see another movie character bend over backwards to avoid a bullet (or milk)? Or another movie character suspended in motion while the camera tracks around him or her? It’s no wonder that until yesterday, I had pretty much dismissed Wanted, because of that Matrix-like bullet time sequence in which Morgan Freeman shoots around a slab of meat to hit an unseen target. Yet as of yesterday, the movie’s Rotten Tomatoes rating was 100% (Anthony Lane’s New Yorker review, posted today, is the first “rotten” one, taking it down to 92%). Now I’m more intrigued. Still, it doesn’t change the fact that that bullet time sequence is t ... " [More]

"Without knowing the specifics (their intellectual stylings, are they little green men or resemble earthlings?, etc.) here are the films I would expose the mysterious extraterrestrials to: 1.) Galaxy Quest - If they are just toying with us and waiting to decimate our planet, this will show them that it'll be pretty easy. If they are peaceful E.T.-like beings then it will show them a range of human emotion, the range of human technology, and our interest in understanding other worlds. 2.) History of the World, Part I - Face it, it's an hour and a half summation of human experience on Earth and a good representation of how humans act and perceive themselves. 3.) Xala - Might as well show them how corrupt and pathetic humans can be upfront. 4.) The Wizard of Oz - We're dreamers till the day we die so why not show them a fantastic exploration of hope, love and imagination that typifies us human beings. 5.) Babel - Very good recent example of life on Earth and th ... " [More]

"Another bit of exciting news from Jason Bateman [again via MTV Movies Blog] regarding the Arrested Development movie: “the ball has started rolling down the hill again.” Okay, so it’s not too exciting, nor is it revelatory in the least, but at least he says all the creatives are on board. Meanwhile, the actor also commented on his role in the American movie adaptation of the British TV mini-series State of Play, which, combined with MTV’s other post about the American TV series remake/adaptation of the British TV series Spaced, has me putting a little thought into the subject of theatrical spin-offs versus movie adaptations. Certainly those of us who are fans of a series would rather see it continued with all original talent on board (even if we are cynically fearing the result) than see it adapted into a movie version many years down the line, whether the approach be faithful or parody or an attempt at both. Try to imagine another cast playing the Arrested Development and Sex and ... " [More]

"TronI remember that episode of The Simpsons where Homer asks if anyone has seen the movie Tron. Everyone denies it except for Wiggum (who actually denies it twice and then confirms it and then retracts again. Oh believe me, it's funny). I'd seen short clips of the movie, but never watched the whole thing. My friend Noah was wild about it though, and when I was visiting him on my vacation last Spring he had me and my other friend Adam watch it. Ok, yeah the effects look pretty horrible by today's standards. Although it does still look totally different from anything anyone would conceive of today probably. I actually kind of like it for it's effects. But the rest of the story is really bad. Really goofy. I'm sure many disagree. But maybe as The Simpsons seems to think, not that many people have seen it anyways. Or they are too embarrassed to admit it.Rating: 6/10 " [More]
