Directed by Lucio Fulci.
This gruesome horror film from cult director Lucio Fulci posits a priest's suicide opening the gateway to Hell, freeing bloodthirsty zombies to roam the town of Dunwich. The main attractions are startlingly explicit special effects by Franco Rufino, including two of the horror genre's most memorable deaths. One involves perennial victim Giovanni Lombardo Radice (also known as John Morghen) having his head run through with a power-drill, and the second is the notorious scene of a woman vomiting up all of her internal organs in a nauseating torrent of blood and guts. Fulci does manage one nice moment of splatter-free horror, as hero Christopher George struggles to free a woman who has been buried alive. As his pick-axe enters the coffin repeatedly, it comes ever closer to her face, causing the audience to wince with each strike. Aside from these scenes, though, Fulci's direction is somewhat plodding, as he substitutes slow pacing and clouds of fog for real suspense. Horror fans will still want to seek this film out, however, if only for the effects work and a familiar cast including Catriona MacColl, Janet Agren, Carlo de Mejo, Antonella Interlenghi, and Daniela Doria. ~ Robert Firsching, All Movie Guide

"I was 19 years old during the period of late '79- early 1980. And it is during that time that I wandered into a seedy, downtown Denver 'movie-house'. The only thing I knew about the movie I was about to see was the name on the marquee... "ZOMBIE"... I was STUNNED! This Movie Was PHENOMENAL! Up to this point, the 'goriest' movies I had ever seen would be "Night Of The Living Dead" and "The Exorcist" ... (I had not yet seen "Dawn Of The Dead" which was released the year before...) ... and some B-movie Drive-In fare like "Last House On The Left" and "The Toolbox Murders" and "Driller Killer" and "The Drive-In Massacre" and, of course, "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" ... This movie (for me, at the time) outdid them ALL! From the FANTASTIC 'comic book' story line to the AMAZING, 'in your face'', "GORE FX"! ( "excuse me, Miss.. ... " [More]

"Is Fulci's The Gates Of Hell (aka City Of The Living Dead ) a zombie movie? I have seen it listed and/or described as such in several places but I am not so sure. The creatures in this movie certainly resemble zombies and behave like zombies with a couple of notable exceptions... They don't seem to be interested in EATING anyone, only in killing people by ripping through their skulls and tearing out a huge chunk of brain with their bare hands. Also, they have the ability to appear and dissappear into thin air, apparently at will. I don't think this is normal zombie behavior. Also, the dead priest is certainly not a zombie but some sort of ghost or demon or demonic ghost with the uncanny ability to make people vomit up all of their internal organs and stuff just by looking into their eyes. Another example of this type of mis-identification is The Fog , which I have seen mentioned in this group in the 'Zombie Quote Tag' thread, I believe. To me ... " [More]

"*flexes fingers, cracks knuckles*Worthy contenders, all vying for the top spot (rated off the scale on http://bloodgutsandgore.com, are:"The Body Purging" from City of the Living Dead, the scene in the car where the young girl literally pukes her guts out. Seriously twisted and stomach-churning stuff."Blood Orgy" and "Way Off the Scale" from Darkness. The first is a jaw-dropper where a horde of vampires besets a young man and bleed him like a stuck pig. The second is the end sequence which seems to go on forever in which every bloodsucker gets caught up in the frenzy and forgets to duck inside before it gets light. "Oh you have no idea, Ms. June. I used to be quite a hound, actually. I went on Amazon at one point and just put in "gore" for a search. You would not BELIEVE some of the crap that came up. That was how I found out about most of the "Italian Horror" like Zombie and The Beyond and City of the Living Dead and so on and so forth. Oh yeah! Bad Taste and Dead Alive and even Meet the Feebles! That one will make you queasy, let me tell you, even though it isn't really a horror movie. I have toned down quite a bit since then, but every once in a while I can for for a good head-choppin', bowl-spillin', blood-squirtin' gory good time. By the way, the fellows are right about the Guinea Pig movies, mostly. If you watch the double feature I mentioned, Mermaid in a Manhole / He Never Dies, these two stories are very much not borderline snuff films. They're just weird and unsettling / funny as hell, respectively. HOWEVER, Flowers of Flesh and Blood basically IS a sn ... " [More]

"Yes, you are correct, Froggy! Mr. Fulcii's movies DID deteriorate during His final years! I would suggest, in this order, "Zombie" , "The Gates Of Hell" (aka "City Of The Living Dead") and "The Beyond" ... beyond that, you are entering at your own risk! ... "House By The Cemetary" was not bad... " [More]

"Just that. In horror-dom, there seems to be this mandatory bravura, this stolid attitude of "that wasn't scary" or "that was lame." I believe, however, if you can find the chinks in this armor, you can pry the plates apart and find what really gets beneath someone's skin, what really scares them. Case in point: in Saw II, one of the most squirm-inducing sequences for a lot of viewers, despite the brutal violence and gushing gore was the infamous needle pit that Xavier so courteously treated Amanda to. A lot of people simply were taken to the edge by that scene, deeply affected. I, on the other hand, didn't bat an eyelash. Now, I get through horror in part because I know it's not real (save those tasteless Italians...) and that, moreover, I know how they do it. There is one thing - only one - that puts me in my place and makes me realize I'm not invulnerable to the horrors of Horror. An instance in Dead Men Walking speaks to this end and in fact lays out my ... " [More]

This Italian horror film, also released on video as The Gates of Hell, is a dry run for the blend of graphic shocks and surrealism atmosphere that Lucio Fulci would perfect with The Beyond. Patience and a strong stomach are prerequisites for viewing City of the Living Dead because it suffers from the same shortcomings present in much of Fulci's other horror films. Its narrative is loose, the pacing often lags, and the film relies on stomach-churning gore effects in place of suspense. Despite these problems, City of the Living Dead benefits from Fulci's ability to create and sustain an intensely creepy atmosphere. The patient viewer will be rewarded with a handful of intense sequences guaranteed to stick in the memory; Mary's vision of the priest's graveyard suicide and the sequence where Peter struggles to free Mary from her premature grave are two of the most memorable highlights. The film's feel of skin-crawling dread is further aided by Sergio Salvati's lush photography and Fabio Frizzi's Goblin-ish prog rock musical score. City of the Living Dead also benefits from solid performances by the leads. Christopher George is likable as the gruff reporter and Fulci stalwart Catriona MacColl acquits herself well in a potentially campy role by playing it straight. Ultimately, City of the Living Dead is too uneven and unfocused to rate as a solid horror film, but its singular combination of deep-dish atmosphere and visceral shocks will appeal to horror fans who enjoyed The Beyond. ~ Donald Guarisco, All Movie Guide
