Directed by Brian Robbins.
In his first feature following the success of television's Dawson's Creek, James Van Der Beek stars as Jonathan Moxon, the back-up quarterback on his high-school football team, the West Canaan Coyotes. In West Canaan, the only thing that matters is football, and the man who matters is the one with 22 divisional championships, coach Bud Kilmer (Jon Voight). Mox, as the young "A" student is called, is wrapping up his senior year on his way to Brown University in the shadow of his childhood friend, star quarterback Lance Harbor (Paul Walker). With only five games until the end of the season, Kilmer pushes his players too hard, and Lance suffers a career-ending injury, forcing Mox to play and win the game. Now the starter, Mox must deal with his newfound celebrity; the attentions of Lance's girlfriend, head-cheerleader Darcy (Ali Larter); prevent his friends and fellow players Billy Bob (Ron Lester) and Tweeder (Scott Caan) from self-destructing; prevent Coach Kilmer from crushing everybody; and hold on to his own girlfriend, Lance's sister Jules (Amy Smart). Oh, and Mox must also win the championship and prove himself the hero. ~ Ron Wells, All Movie Guide

"Naked pictures of a stripper? Not news. Naked pictures of a stripper-turned-Oscar-winning- screenwriter? Eh. Pictures of a stripper-turned-Oscar-winning- screenwriter emulating the naked-but-for-whipped-cream scene from the classic James Van Der Beek vehicle Varsity Blues? News enough! Meanwhile, proving that no good-intentioned attempt to bridge the cultural-political divide goes unpunished, some people are mad that soldiers presented Oscars. Interestingly, most of the complaints conflate the two documentary awards into the claim that the Academy implicitly mocked the soldiers by forcing them to give an award to the anti-Iraq war film Taxi to the Darkside. In fact, the soldiers presented the Best Documentary Short award, which went to Freeheld. Debbie Schlussel, probably the most hateful of the Hollywood haters, gets that part right, but she also repeatedly insists that Diablo Cody is fat, which, as the above pictures of her ribcage should show, is definitely wrong. David Bordwell ... " [More]

"As a former fat guy, I have to salute actor Ron Lester, who went on the Today Show yesterday showing off his slim figure (see the segment here). You may remember Lester as the really, really fat high school football player “Billy Bob” from Varsity Blues, or his identical character from Not Another Teen Movie. Back in 2001, he lost 315lbs. — 43lbs. of it extra skin that had to be removed — and even lost 2 inches worth of height (thanks to the weight lost from his head). He did this by gastric bypass surgery and it was primarily for heath reasons, but damn if he doesn’t look much better, too. The problem is, according to the person submitting this story to Fark.com, he may now be handsomer but he may also have cost himself his acting career. Obviously he had been employed in the past for his physique more than his acting talent, and now he’s missing that thing that guaranteed his being hired (his only significant movie post-surgery was Karate Dog). Certainly he’d rather be alive, tho ... " [More]

"Even though it's predictable as hell and a bit cheesy, I can't say I hated Varsity Blues. The characters are likeable, the "action" scenes well photographed, and it's got Ali Larter on a whipped cream bathing suit. Yum. " [More]

A kind of '90s update of the Tom Cruise teen drama All the Right Moves, this bid to create a leading man status for television heartthrob James Van Der Beek is surprisingly enjoyable, even when you anticipate its every move. Set in a football-loving Texas town, the film scores in its depiction of a small town swallowed up by the allure of the "big game". The film makes an intriguing case for good-looking misanthropes who are wrenched into the mania of hometown sports, but ultimately it says nothing new about teenagers. Sandwiched in with some effective scenes are the requisite boozing, sex and raucous behavior typical of lesser teen comedies, which never elevates the film. This was one of the first productions from MTV Films, who had a sizable hit with this feature, released just after the new year, ordinarily a dumping ground for Z-grade features that studios fear. ~ Jason Clark, All Movie Guide
