Directed by Adrian Lyne.
Jennifer Beals stars as Alex Owens, a Pittsburgh steel-mill welder by day, and bar dancer by night. Harboring dreams of a career in ballet, she is given financial support in this endeavor by her boss Nick Hurley (Michael Nouri) and moral support by demanding but big-hearted instructor Hanna Long (Lilia Skala). The film's signature scene is, of course, Alex's water-drenched dance audition, largely performed in long shot by her dance double Marine Jahan. Essentially an old-fashioned backstage yarn, Flashdance was given a contemporary spin by its pulsating, musical score featuring the Oscar-winning Best Song, Flashdance...What a Feeling, (music by Giorgio Moroder, lyrics by Keith Forsey and Irene Cara). ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

"Ok, my first post and here I go: Jacob's Ladder I first watched this film in the early 90's when I was a kid and found it incredibly boring. I watched it again in my mid 20's (so recently) and understood a lot more of the film but still found it boring. Some great performances and imagery but ultimately, unsatisfactory. The ending was a real let down, as well. Crash I cannot believe in all honesty that this won best picture or was even nominated for that matter. I found it completely cliched, hammy and pretentious. I haven't felt this hit over the head by a film since....oh I don't know, ever probably. During this film I couldn't help but think of The Birth of a Nation and how Crash actually managed to make that movie look subtle. Honorable Mentions: The English Patient, American Beauty, Flashdance, and The Lord of the Rings. " [More]

"I guess Harvey hasn't totally given up on the idea of flogging Death Proof and Planet Terror as separate films just quite yet. Robert Rodriguez' zombie-centric half of Grindhouse has been slotted to screen at Europe's largest open-air venue at the Locarno Film Festival next month. Speaking of Harvey flogging, the Weinstein Company has acquired North American rights to Make it Happen, after brokering sales of international rights to other parties at Berlin and Cannes. The film, which was penned by the guy who brought you Save the Last Dance and Step Up, tracks an aspiring dancer who moves to Chicago and becomes a stripper. So, basically, it's a remake of Flashdance. Variety has confirmed that Kevin Spacey will be back as Lex Luthor in the next installment of Bryan Singer's Superman franchise. In the piece, Spacey also vociferously refutes rumors that recently claimed he was retiring from movies. "In no way did I use the word retirement. Someone else pulled that out of thin air. It ... "Ocean's 13 is the third in director Steven Soderbergh ("The Good German")'s heist series. It's better than the second film, but doesn't quite have the magic of the first. Everyone is very charming and handsome. But mostly I was only kind of interested in the story. However, Casey Affleck ("The Last Kiss")'s story line with the worker revolution was priceless. George Washington is the first movie from writer/director David Gordon Green ("Snow Angels"). The film is set in a rural Southern town populated with interesting people. The story focuses on a group of kids and a tragic accident. Voice over plays throughout the film and some of it is insightful. Some of it just weird. A couple of times I was surprised at what was happening. But some lines and scenes have stuck in my head all week. And that's a good thing. "I wish there were 200 of me." Flashdance was just different than I expected. I thought it was going to be entirely fluffy, but it was much more serious than I had antici ... " [More]

The sleeper hit Flashdance had surprising crossover appeal for a movie that featured strippers and X-rated footsie under the dinner table. In part because of its soundtrack, which became a pop sensation on the strength of Irene Cara's "What a Feeling" and Michael Sembello's "Maniac," the R-rated Flashdance was seen by an untold number of viewers under 17. The glimpses of nudity may have been partly to blame, but more than that, the transformation of Alex Owens from blue-collar welder to legitimate ballet hopeful was the stuff of dreams for teenage girls. Factor in the subplot about a friend trying to make it in ice skating, and this film seems tailor made to be teen wish fulfillment, except for all the time it spends in the nudie bars. Flashdance turned Jennifer Beals into an overnight sensation, her tough cookie with sex appeal image quickly assuming iconic status. Its nearly 95-million-dollar domestic take, steadily buoyed by word-of-mouth during a months-long theatrical engagement, was almost unheard of for an R-rated movie, ranking it the third highest grosser of 1983. The project also became the first hit in the notorious careers of screenwriter Joe Eszterhas and producers Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer. The kind of film that's so aggressively formulaic that it bowls over any objections, Flashdance has become fodder for numerous parodies and spawned countless imitators. For whatever reason, it struck a chord, and indeed produced quite a feeling. ~ Derek Armstrong, All Movie Guide
