The top-five list is a difficult call. I made this list so I would be forced to narrow my favorites down to the paradigm of my taste in film. These are all in My Favorites, obviously, and my general description of these can be found there. Here, my descri

Bruce Willis is in it. Brad Pitt does an excellent job as the crazy and hilarious Jeffrey Goines. The Time Travel sequences are done with original integrity. Each jump back and forth continues to rearrange the focus of the film. It's funny, it's thought provoking in a deep way, and the whole plot actually ties everything together to make perfect sense.

I am a Kubrick fan, and this is my favorite film by him. The futuristic setting, based on Anthony Burgess' language and culture modifications, bring out a dark and brutal fantasy world that is like no other I've ever seen on film.

It messes with your mind. A few times. The props used are a grotesque mix of biology and technology, and the setting changes rapidly yet, with purpose. I liked not knowing who was in control throughout the film, and, of course, I had all kinds of philosophical queries after I was done watching it.
Minority Report
Steven Spielberg

This film could be used in an ethics class. Issues of justice, utilitarianism, and even Machivellian ethics are flushed out through some of the weaker performances by Colin Farel and some of the supporting actors. I love the eye-scanner bit, the fluid newspapers, and the "sick-sticks" as they are portrayed here. I could go on and on about how much I liked the ideas of this film. I want to read Philip K. Dick's short-story that inspired it sometime.

Who doesn't love The Matrix? Most people either didn't get it, or had some life-changing epiphany while watching it. The sequels are interesting to watch, and they flush out some of the questions I had while watching this first one, but the original idea of living in a machine-controlled virtual world is excellently handled by the Wachowskis. Red Pill or Blue Pill?
