Inspired by a familiar Chinese folk tale, this $90 million animated Disney drama follows the adventures of a young woman in ancient China. Character animator Tony Bancroft and 17-year Disney veteran Barry Cook (Captain EO, Tron, Trail Mix-Up) formed the directing team with production design by Hans Bacher (Balto), and work on the film began 2 January 1995 under the working title The Legend of Mulan. While the merciless Shan-Yu (Miguel Ferrer) leads invading Huns over the Great Wall, young Mulan (Ming-Na Wen, with singing by Lea Salonga) sees a matchmaker about her matrimonial future. Mulan's views on accepted marriage traditions prompt the ballad, "Reflection," as she hopes for a recognition of her true self. To repel the Huns, a man from each family is required to join the Imperial Army. When Mulan's elderly father Fa Zhou (Soon-Tek Oh) volunteers, she objects. He warns, "I know my place. It is time you learned yours." Mulan, however, cuts her hair, dresses as a man, and is ready for military camp, prompting the concern of her First Ancestor (George Takei), who converts an inanimate incense burner into the 18-inch high comedic dragon Mushu (Eddie Murphy). With Mushu hidden in her clothing, she joins a group of raw recruits under the command of Captain Shang (B.D. Wong, singing by Donny Osmond). During an ambush by the Huns in a mountain pass, Mulan steps in to turn defeat into a victory. Mulan was the first Disney feature from the company's 200,000-square-foot Orlando facility (now known as Walt Disney Feature Animation Florida). ~ Bhob Stewart, All Movie Guide

"Last week it was announced that yet another screenwriter has been hired to pen a draft of the I Dream of Jeannie movie. This time it’s Rita Hsiao, who worked on Disney’s Mulan, Toy Story 2 and Enchanted. Reportedly there’s already been at least five writers on board, but apparently producer Sid Ganis (Duece Bigalow: Male Gigalo) wants the thing to be perfect. Well, how hard could it be to come up with a plot for the thing? Just combine the storylines from the TV movies I Dream of Jeannie: 15 Years Later and I Still Dream of Jeannie, both of which opened the series up to more drama and thrills, such as the tense outer space sequence from 15 Years Later seen in the video above. Just budget for some better effects, and that sequence could make the Jeannie movie a blockbuster comparable to Armageddon. OK, I’m joking, but only a little. The Jeannie movie really should venture into the space travel angle, putting Major Nelson and Jeannie in danger (in I Still Dream, with Nelson long gon ... " [More]

"Movie theater chains in India refused to screen The Simpsons Movie over the weekend — and, surprisingly, it had nothing to do with outrage over Apu. Warner Brothers India, which is distributing the Fox film in that country, apparently demanded that Indian multiplexes book Simpsons on multiple screens, which would have squeezed out homegrown content.  In response, seven leading theater chains declined to run the Fox film at all, and even upped the ante by pulling WB’s latest Harry Potter pic from screens. Facing a projected loss of nearly $100,000 for the weekend, WB workd out a compromise, and Simpsons should open on some Indian screens today. After staying on in order to see through a number of “very personal projects” including Rush Hour 3 (yes, seriously), long-time New Line marketing exec Russell Schwartz has confirmed that he’s leaving the company. The Weinstein Company has raised $285 million to launch Asian Film Fund, through which they expect to produce roughly 30 “Asian-th ... " [More]

"Person: Eddie Murphy, Greatest Work: Shrek 1-3, Dreamgirls, Dr. Dollitle, Nutty Professor 1-2, Mulan and some oldies Beverly Hills Cop, Golden Child and Trading Places, Gossip: It has been reported that the paternity test has taken place. Mommy "Scary Spice", Melanie Brown has always maintained there is no doubt who the father of her baby girl is. We will see, will Eddie have a sixth child, adding to the five with his former wife? I have always thought Eddie is energetic, talented and has always made me laugh. But, it seems since his earlier years, he has had a few more critics. Specifically, following the dreamgirl nomination-but no win walkout, it seems he appears withdrawn and sort of crabby to the press. Maybe it is his personal problems. Maybe people like him better funny and he resents this, or maybe his notorious characteristic laughs are simply getting cut from his interviews. What is your favorie Murphy movie? For all you Shrek fans, 2010 Shrek 4 has been announc ... " [More]

is neutral about it.
Beginning with The Lion King and Pocahontas, Disney's feature animation efforts took on a more ethnically diverse tone in the late 1990s. As a result, the studio that had once specialized in white-bread Americana took on a more global viewpoint. Mulan was another example of this trend, using mostly Asian voices and a diverse group of production talents in the service of a lavish adaptation of a traditional Chinese folk tale. Centering on a young girl who disguises herself as a man and joins the Army in order to save her family's honor, the film is a feminist statement -- which is in keeping with the 1990s Disney trend of stronger female protagonists. The score by Jerry Goldsmith and songs by Matthew Wilder and David Zippel add some lightness to an unusually mirthless Disney drama. Comedian Eddie Murphy is one of the few big-name talents in the production; Ming-Na Wen's strong but compassionate voice carries the bulk of the film. ~ Michael Betzold, All Movie Guide
