In 1973 the seminal rock band Led Zeppelin, one of the founders of the music genre known as "heavy metal," went on tour and performed in Madison Square Garden. This documentary has concert footage, including the 23-minute-long version of the song "Dazed and Confused." The film also shows the musicians at home, pursuing some of their hobbies including drag-racing. The concert coverage also has scenes revealing what took place backstage, and a discussion of the theft of the band's cash during their visit to New York. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

"Let me get one thing clear up front: The Song Remains the Same is a movie about a band that I simply don't like- Led Zepplin, and I watched it with copious use of the fast forward button. They have a total of one song I really like, "Good Times, Bad Times", and two songs that I think are okay-"The Battle of Evermore" and "Stairway to Heaven." But I find the vast majority of this massively overrated band's work to be boring, tedious, and repetitive. Yes, Jimmy Page is a virtuoso guitarist, but he rarely plays anything to listen to. A six minute song consisting mostly of boring guitar solos and occasion cheesy mythological lyrics just does not appeal to me. So I saw this movie mostly out of curiosity than anything else. Had it been merely a concert film, I would have skipped it, but the movie is more than that. It combines footage of three concerts from Madison Square Garden with cinema verite documentary footage of behind the scenes antics, combined with elaborate staged fan ... " [More]

"I watched The Song Remains the Same instantly on Netflix because I was in the mood for some rock, Zeppelin-style. As one of my favorite bands, I've been motivated to see parts of this documentary before but never made it all the way through because the dream sequences/extra footage made my head hurt a little. Also, the viewer is treated to Zep's 23-minute long rendition of "Dazed and Confused," featuring, among other things, Jimmy Page whaling on his guitar with a violin bow, which is artistically amazing but, as sound, makes my teeth chatter. Now, I can say I've watched it all and like it. If you count yourself among Led Zeppelin fans, particularly with the band's recent "reunion," this movie is a must-see. It was released around the time of "Houses of the Holy," which features the film's title song as its first cut. The film provides footage of a concert given at Madison Square Garden, when, also, the band's money was stol ... " [More]

"Awww. No Empire Records? Just kidding. Your category is so broad! I mean, I could maybe do top 5s in musicals, in performance films, etc. etc. There are whole Spout groups devoted to each of these little subtopics. So, I'll throw out one or two favorites of each, in no specific order:--In music documentaries, my number one favorite is The Beatles Anthology. Yes, it was originally relegated to TV because it's so huge, but it's one of the most comprehensive music documentaries in existence by the greatest rock n roll band ever (and also my favorite). It's very complete and well-filmed. I just bought it, matter of fact, though I had a previous VCR version taped from those TV segments however many years ago.--In musicals, my two hands-down favorites are The Wizard of Oz and Singin' in the Rain. They are widely regarded as the best movie musicals, and while from the classic era, are just fun movies to watch, and they are two of my nerd movies (as in, I can re ... " [More]
