Directed by Jim Gillespie.
During the annual July 4th festivities in a North Carolina fishing town, Helen (Sarah Michelle Gellar) wins a local beauty contest and departs with her boyfriend Barry (Ryan Philippe) and pals Julie (Jennifer Love Hewitt) and Ray (Freddie Prinze Jr.). On their way back home, Ray hits a fisherman with her car. The teens panic, drop the body in the water, and abandon the scene. Many months later when Julie returns from college, she gets an anonymous note: "I know what you did last summer." The four teens suspect the note was written by their classmate Max (Johnny Galecki), but then Max is murdered -- and the terror begins. (In the original Lois Duncan novel, the teens hit a small boy on a bicycle instead of a fisherman.) The screenplay is by Kevin Williamson, whose credits include the 1996 box-office hit Scream. ~ Bhob Stewart, All Movie Guide

"Ever since joining Spout.com a while back, I've come to learn a lot about film in general and my movie watching habits. One of the more prominant things is how the Movies I've Watched By Decade chart. Since I first starting watching movies at a high rate 2+ years ago, it's not surprising that most are from this decade. They seem to be more accessible, and more prominant on my mind as being ones I want to see. Plus, when deciding what to watch with my wife or with friends, we usually decide on something recent, as most casual movie watchers prefer. Nothing wrong with that. But I've found that because about 50% of the films I've seen are from this decade, I'm missing out on a lot. Of course I'm trying to watch the classics from each decade--it's a slow process but I'm getting there. But there are a lot of good ones out there I'd never stumble across unless forced to in a way, which is why I've decided to focus on one decade at a time, for now anyway. Since I've seen a fair sh ... " [More]

"What if this movie were not directed by acclaimed filmmaker Gus Van Sant? What if it had not been honored with a special prize at last year’s Cannes Film Festival? What if it had not been an official selection of the Toronto and New York Film Festivals? What if it wasn’t nominated for three (Independent) Spirit Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Producer? What if Manohla Dargis didn’t consider it, “one of the most moving and delicately felt films of Gus Van Sant’s career”? Would Paranoid Park still seem that appealing? Not to me, but then I’ve seen enough films involving teens covering up an intentional or accidental murder. And that’s despite having enjoyed most of them, including Mean Creek, Bully, George Washington and even (though much, much less so) I Know What You Did Last Summer. Honestly, if this new domestic trailer for Paranoid Park didn’t mention all its prestigious claims, I probably wouldn’t be that compelled to see it. In fact, even if it simply me ... " [More]

Screenwriter Kevin Williamson's follow-up to his blockbuster hit Scream (1996) is a more traditional, less jokey teen slasher film than its predecessor. The central plot contrivance is an amusing twist on the cult classic I Saw What You Did (1965), and the attractive young cast pulls it off without a hitch. Viewers who remember the early 1980s slasher glut, however, may feel as if they've been down this road a few too many times, as this entry -- despite its better-than-average acting and production values -- offers nothing especially new or different to the formula. Genre devotees and fans of the cast members should still find it enjoyable, but those expecting another Scream might be disappointed. ~ Robert Firsching, All Movie Guide
