Here are my picks for nice looking movies that don't really have any original ideas, but sometimes turn out alright.

This moving is almost scene for scene a ripoff of Tommy Boy. I am not even kidding. Weird goofy comedian inherits business through some tragedy. Business goes down hill. Through twist of luck idiot gets idea. Idea is success. Company doing well. Of course through all of this, comedy ensues. Funny thing, for some reason I enjoyed this.
Equilibrium
Kurt Wimmer

This one is a combo meal of movie cloning. It stinks of me-too-ism. Thankfully it actually turns out well and is a fantastic direct-to-DVD release. What you have here is Fahrenheit 451 and the Matrix smashed together... and it works.
I Heart Huckabees
David O. Russell
(2004)

From the moment I saw the trailer, I knew what these guys were trying to do... get people that love Paul Thomas Anderson and Wes Anderson to come see their flick. The music in the trailer evoked that exact mood. Unfortunately it came off as trying to do too much and trying to hard and in the end the movie was just plain eh. What makes it sting worse for me is that David O. Russel did Three Kings and that movie was mind-blowingly great.
The Chumscrubber
Arie Posin

This movie screams Donnie Darko, but in a less mysterious and intriguing way. It is actually quite baffling. Based on the concept I was on board. But once the movie gets rolling, you realize that it has a terrible case of confusion on its hands. What is the point? What is the plot? Why do I care? In its attempt to be important and poignant it ends up feeling derivitive and cheap. Too bad.
