Directed by Luc Besson.
Good and evil battle for the future of 23rd century Earth in this visually striking big-budget science fiction epic. In the movie's prologue, which is set in 1914, scientists gather in Egypt at the site of an event that transpired centuries earlier. Aliens, it seemed, arrived to collect four stones representing the four basic elements (earth, air, fire and water) - warning their human contacts that the objects were no longer safe on Earth. A few hundred years later (in the 23rd century), a huge ball of molten lava and flame is hurtling toward Earth, and scientist-holy man Victor Cornelius (Ian Holm) declares that in order to prevent it from destroying the planet, the same four elemental stones must be combined with the fifth element, as embodied by a visitor from another world named Leeloo (Milla Jovovich). However, if the force of evil presents itself to the stones instead, the Earth will be destroyed, and a sinister alien race called the Mangalores are intent upon using their representative, Zorg (Gary Oldman), to trigger the disaster. Despite her remarkable powers, Leeloo needs help with her mission, and she chooses her accomplice, military leader-turned-cab driver Korben Dallas (Bruce Willis), when she literally falls through the roof of his taxi. Writer and director Luc Besson began writing the script for The Fifth Element when he was only 16 years old, though he was 38 before he was able to bring it to the screen. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

"The Fifth Element is about this big fire ball thing that is going to destroy the world if these stone things are not placed around this room in Egypt, and this perfect being is in the middle. The movie had that hilarious retro 80's style future similar to that of Blade Runner only a little less dark. Over all I thought this was a great Science Fiction/Action movie. It had some funny parts, some ridiculous parts, lots of cheesy parts, and a few good action scenes. Some things that were hilarious about this film was seeing Chris Tucker who I have only seen in Rush Hour in another movie. He was basically the same as in Rush Hour which was even more funny. Another thing I found hilarious about this movie was the huge plug for McDonalds, it was so obvious you just have to laugh at the big media conglomerates shameless plug. So in the end I think this is one of thoughts fun cheesy action movies that is worth renting. " [More]

"With the New Hampshire primary upon us, and in response to the results of last week’s Iowa Caucus, I’ve been thinking about the possible influence of pop culture on Democratic voters. Is it possible that Obama performed better than Clinton because 24 is a more popular TV show than was the short-lived Commander in Chief? The former has so far featured two African American Presidents, played by Dennis Haysbert and D.B. Woodside, while the latter was about a female President, portrayed by Geena Davis. The next season of 24, which is set to premiere once the WGA strike is finished, will actually feature a female President, played by Cherry Jones, but it may be too late. Americans could already be set on nominating a black man, because they’re more familiar with seeing such a President on both the big and small screen. And what a crop of African American actors we’ve seen as the leader of the United States: Morgan Freeman (Deep Impact); James Earl Jones (1972’s The Man); Tommy ‘Tiny’ Li ... " [More]

"There is nothing particularly badly done about the movie Clean, but there is not much remarkable about it either. For a movie about drugs, bad relationships, motherhood, prison, the entertainment industry, big city hopping, and a lot more, there is surprisingly few high or low points of drama. Everything kind of just trudges along. Which might be fine if there was also some humor. But this movie is not only lacking in drama, it's completely lacking in humor. There's not a lick of it. And there's certainly no action. What else is there? Art? Not really.I was thinking maybe it was hard for me to respond to this movie because it focuses on a culture that I generally have an aversion to and little interest in. People who are looking for fame and reputation. People who want to be cool but are still interested in fame and money. How do I describe it? You know people who have no real personality, but a big ego, and listen to crappy music? But I don't think I have ... " [More]

"Ok so for three consecutive days MovieMind has suggested I watch Children of Men so last night I did and I was impressed. I was a big fan of 12 Monkeys and Wasa told this was similar but better and it think that was a correct assesment. While I didn't find the acting Oscar worthy. The plot was well concieved and written. Kudos to Alfonso Cuarón and Timothy J. Sexton for their writing and also Cuarón's direction. It often seems to me that when the director also writes, things seem to be tighter, unless that person is well...lacking talent. The sets in the movie were awesome every thing was believable. I'm one of thoes agnostic types that just really don't get into things that are "sloppy fiction". This movie, take for instance, the cars in the movie are futuristic not overwelmingly so and they still drive on regular pavement. In twenty years this will most likely be the case, unlike Minority Report or The Fifth Element. This was definatly a da ... " [More]

"This is by far one of the best Sci-Fi/Action movies out there. Not only does the story keep you leaning foreward, the special effects & cinematography amaze your eyes. Its funny, deep, action packed, sweet, & the special effects are STILL better than most movies made today. thats my two cents. " [More]

The Fifth Element is a colorful riot of a story, not precisely long on sensible plotting but making up for its flaws with nonstop movement and humor, courtesy of director Luc Besson. It's a flat-out comedy with a handful of dramatic elements designed to appease those looking for an event movie, and Bruce Willis does a brilliant job of playing the tight-jawed, fast-shooting, hard-hitting hero. Gary Oldman's Zorg is a flare of color, tacky and dangerous, no physical antagonist for Dallas (Bruce Willis), but making up for it in intellect -- which tends to come a cropper, since none of his assistants has the brains to tie shoelaces without disaster. Ian Holm is in fine form too, turning in a lightly comic performance that's a delight to watch. The Fifth Element is really worth the candle when it comes to the design and visual effects. Sticking with the story will get viewers through all the eye candy in a speedy enough fashion, and even Chris Tucker's seriously over-the-top performance as Ruby Rhod is unlikely to cause a bump. New York in the 23rd century is crowded and overactive, buildings rising for miles and traffic running in multiple lanes between those buildings. While the makeup effects seem to be relatively ordinary, the visual effects -- computer-generated as well as model-based -- are eye-popping and brain-straining. The flying traffic alone is phenomenally detailed. Overall, the film is a joy to look at, though video viewers are recommended to find a letterboxed copy. As a whole, The Fifth Element lives up to its title as a self-proclaimed "Sci-Fi Pop Epic." Taken in the intended spirit -- as a comedy, rather than as a dramatic effort -- the film is grand entertainment. ~ Steven E. McDonald, All Movie Guide
