Directed by Joel Schumacher.
This was the third follow-up to Tim Burton's Batman (1989), the original revisionist look at the Gotham City legend, as well as the second in the Batman series directed by Joel Schumacher and the first featuring George Clooney as the Caped Crusader; it features not one but two super-villains, and a new heroine to fight crime alongside Bruce Wayne (aka Batman) and Dick Grayson (aka Robin) (Chris O'Donnell). The experiments of Dr. Victor Fries (Arnold Schwarzenegger) to preserve his late wife cryogenically have gone horribly wrong, turning him into the evil genius Mr. Freeze, who must keep his body at sub-zero temperature in order to say alive -- and he wants to put Gotham City on ice. Shy horticulturist Pamela Isley (Uma Thurman) goes a bit wild with a Venus Fly Trap-like creation she's been working on and mutates into Poison Ivy, who wants to kill all the people on Earth so plants can take over. Can Batman and Robin stop these fiends before their plans go too far? Meanwhile, Bruce and Dick's faithful butler Alfred (Michael Gough) isn't feeling well, so his niece Barbara (Alicia Silverstone) comes to pay a visit. When Barbara finds out what her uncle's employers do in their spare time, she decides she wants in on the action, and she joins the crime fighting twosome as Batgirl. Batman & Robin also features Jesse Ventura in a small role as a prison guard; it would be his last film role before becoming Governor of Minnesota in 1998. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

"Let's give it some credit. Batman & Robin is an awful movie, but it's an intentionally awful movie. It's clear that by this point in the series nobody was takening the movie's seriously, so I suppose that Joel Schumaker figured the audince shouldn't either. Big mistake. The movie died at the box office and recieved horrid reviews. It was so bad that new Batman George Clooney said that he would personally refund the admission price of anyone theatregoer who asked him. Let's start on with positive side. George Clooney is an improvement over Val Kilmar (although he's still a far cry from Michael Keaton), Michael Gough, a very talented British characer actor, is given some interesting scenes as Alfred, the butler. There are three or four jokes in the film that are funny (out of about 200). The cinemataography has bright colors that are fun to look at. Okay, that's everything. Now the problems. If you are going to Batman as a comedy, you'd better do it full out like the ol ... " [More]

"[quote user="porcupine"] Here's a twist: Make a Five for Five list of movies that are all in the same series. There are limited possibilities, some I've just thought of are Star Wars, the Bond films, Star Trek... I'm sure there are others. I might be able to do a Star Wars one, but in all honesty I do at least like all the films, so I really wouldn't be able to give any of them a one. So there you go, extra points for the first person to do it. Go! [/quote] Here we go: Batman 5 * Batman Begins 4 * Batman Returns 3 * Batman 2 * Batman Forever 1 * Batman & Robin My opinion of Batman, Batman Returns and Batman Begins seems to change whenever I get a chance to re-watch one them. So this is the current ranking for them. It will definitely change over time. And we'll see how this changes with the release of The Dark Knight. " [More]

"'If I "owned" the Batman-name, I would be offended by Joel Schumaker and his conspirators in this farce.'That's what I was thinking through most of Batman & Robin ... but there were a few (very-small) saving-graces---"some useful carbon in this crap."First, the offenses: A lot of the 'jokes' in the dialogue were aimed at the pervy tween set---the ones who have heard all the catchy sayings used by the villains but who are not quite annoyed at them yet.And the 'exposition'? Geez! Joel ought to have had Uma walk out in front of a red curtain before the show: "Ummm, okay you guys, I'm playing this nerd-loser scientist who's like an ecology-loving freak! And she's partnered with another kind of freak who (she doesn't know) is using her work for evil military"And, ummm, she's always dreamed of the day when rich men would be, ummm, like putty in her nerdy little hands, when they would all fawn over her and h ... "I agree with pippin06 on the vast majority of his points.I kinda see Shyamalan as the new Joel Schumacher. Shall we compare?Schumacher's Flatliners -- A fun movie with an eye for grandiosity about death and the afterlife, whatever it is. It turns into a sort of horror flick with heart as the film wears on. The characters find themselves haunted by the horrors they've commited themselves, but find redemption in the act of apology.Compare to Shyamalan's The Sixth Sense -- A really fun movie with a focus on the individual about death and the afterlife, whatever it is. In the end it's remembered as a horror film, but it has a sort of heart as well. A small child brings realization to a middle-aged man who never realized he'd actually passed away, and brings a sort of redemption to his mother who always doubted her own mother.Schumacher's The Lost Boys -- This makes for one hell of a popcorn flick and it's got a popular cast: The Two Coreys (as they are ... "Person: George Clooney, Greatest Work: Ocean's "many", The Perfect Storm, Syriana, Intolerable Cruelty, Batman and Robin, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, Gossip: Even though his 18 year old pot belly pig has died, even though he may have recently had liposuction, even though he hates paparazzi with a passion, even though he says he will never again marry and never have kids to carry on his voted "sexiest looks".............George always seems to come out on top (even if it is in his own, by some people's opinion, arrogant mind ).He has, especially in recent years, really placed forth humanitarian efforts. Specifically, here is the lastest from the insider:GEORGE CLOONEY and his 'Ocean's Thirteen' co-stars have raised $9.3 million for relief efforts in the war-torn Darfur region of Sudan. The organization that Clooney co-founded, Not On Our Watch, has donated $5.5 million to relief organizations in the past three weeks alone.Clooney says that he and actors BRAD PITT, MATT DAMON ... "I'll give it a shot. 1. Batman - You could argue that comic books don't meet the literary requirements, but there is no doubt that Hollywood loves to make films off of them. I suppose Superman, Spiderman or the Xmen could all fit in that spot, but I choose Batman because Hollywood keeps on producing films from that franchise no matter how bad things get. 2. Bram Stoker's Dracula - This story has been told many times. Sometimes true to the original story and sometimes very different, but it's had a big influence on the film industry. 3. Romeo & Juliet - Not really my cup of tea, but filmmakers can't help themselves from cashing in on this weepy love story. Every generation has seen a different version of the film done. Sometimes for the better and sometimes for the worse. " [More]
