Directed by Phillip Noyce.
Based on the popular novels about that other suave, globe-trotting man of action, this genre picture from director Phillip Noyce mixed romance and character development with dangerous stunts, geopolitical intrigue, and a variety of elaborate disguises, resulting in an uneven stew of a spy thriller. Val Kilmer is Simon Templar, a classy, cunning master thief and "man of a thousand faces" who cribs his phony names from those of obscure saints and sells his illegal services to the highest bidder. Hired by an ambitious Russian politician (Rade Serbedzija) to steal the formula for cold fusion, Templar falls in love with Dr. Emma Russell (Elisabeth Shue), the frail Oxford scientist who has unlocked the secret of the process. Back in Moscow, the thief debates whether to betray his new love or the powerful madman who is paying him millions, until he discovers that his client is concealing oil reserves that could save his freezing people. Often seen as an also-ran to the legendary James Bond, Templar, the creation of author Leslie Charteris, in fact predated the first Bond novel by decades and probably inspired Ian Fleming in his creation of the debonair agent. ~ Karl Williams, All Movie Guide

"I like the charactors who are torn by their past or just plain synical because it allows you to get more indept into their lives and into the movie/story that they are being protrayed in. "The Saint" was very beautifully told and well acted out. The movie itself had so many different points and "charactors" that it had something for everyone to enjoy. Val Kilmer makes the BEST freaking saint of all time! " [More]

"So I'll admit it. I like this movie. A lot. If you've looked around at the other stuff I've done here on Spout, you know that I like James Bond films. The way I look at it is like this: "The Saint" is a James Bond movie with a big toe (maybe couple more) dipped into the pool of reality. The Saint's gadgets are believable, he can create disguises, he steals stuff. It's just cool. Women don't fall into his arms. He's secret. He's dangerous. He's a loner. He has a really bad fake South African accent. Really bad. But don't let that ruin it for you. So here's a quick driveby of a fraction of the things I like about this movie: *The soundtrack *Black Rangerovers driven fast *Bad Russian accents *"Hit squads" moving with complete impunity throughout major international capitals *Sweet late 90's computer technologies (email! encryption!) *Snuggly english cottages " [More]
