Directed by Dick Powell.
The Enemy Below is a study of submarine warfare from the vantage point of both sides. Robert Mitchum plays the captain of an American destroyer, who despite having lost his family in the war endeavors to let his head rule his heart in combat. Curt Jurgens co-stars as a German U-boat commander, depicted as being as honorable and compassionate as Mitchum. The two men develop a grudging mutual respect as they pursue one another throughout the North Atlantic. Based on a novel by D. A. Rayner, The Enemy Below was the last theatrical film directed by Dick Powell, who hereafter concentrated on his extensive television work. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

"Caught this one on our 'On Demand' cable service last night. I'm a big fan of 'submarine movies' with all their cliches and standardized plotlines (the 'silent running sequence', the 'depth charges sequence', the 'battle weary captain' the 'going too deep and the pressure is going to crush us sequence'). I wasn't expecting much at first, the acting by the bit players was wooden and the dialog a little corny, but once the two main characters were introduced and the chase begun, this turned out to be a pretty decent little war film. Mitchum and Jurgens were both great, and it was interesting to see a war film that actually avoids taking sides, and treats the enemy with a bit more respect and intelligence. Some other favorites: Run Silent Run Deep, Tokyo Bay, U-571, Das Boot, Crimson Tide, The Hunt for Red October " [More]

Eschewing romantic subplots, patriotic propaganda, and much of the other nonsense that Hollywood tends to throw into combat pictures, 1957's The Enemy Below stands as a superb example of the battle-of-wills type of tactical film. One of the earliest post-World War II films to give a personal face to a heroic enemy, the film nicely avoids taking sides between the two ship captains. The performances by Curd Jurgens, as the sub commander, and Robert Mitchum as his surface counterpart, are both first-rate. The details of the naval combat have a feeling of authenticity, and it's fun for the audience to play along as the two foes attempt to outwit each other. The film has two significant weaknesses. The Oscar-winning special effects at times really do look like the toy ships in a tub that they are, and the intensity of the chase is undermined by a needlessly contrived ending. Where 1958's Run Silent, Run Deep concerns itself with internal crew conflicts and presages such films as Crimson Tide, The Enemy Below was the model for Star Trek's "Balance of Terror" episode, and presages such realistic submarine films as Das Boot. ~ Richard Gilliam, All Movie Guide
