"If I took Earth as seriously as the movie takes itself, I might think that it was worthy of its repuation. But the movie has a major flaw that cannot be over looked. On the Kino DVD, the film was preceded by a prolouge explaining that Dovzhenko's film was not well liked by the Soviet goverment. He had been commissioned to make a propaganda film to appeal to Ukraninian farmers and really to make an art film with experminetal techniques (the farmers didn't like it either). The prolouge states that (I'm paraphrasing here) "the film is best remembered for its visual beauty, and not it's threadbare plot." That's an understatement. And the film is beautiful. Gorgeous in fact. If Dovzhenko had been allowed to make a pure non-narrative art film, we would have one hell of a cinematic experince, a la Koyanistaqqasti. Instead, we get some absolutley gorgeously photographed and edited seqeunces built around an incredibly insipid storyline that takes up way to much of the film. The plot ... " [More]

"Voted by some experts as one of the top ten silent movies but I wasn't in on the voting. The movie is pure communist propaganda. It does however give one a good idea of how communisn in Russia was carried out. It is a good picture of life among the farmers in Russia at that time(1930). Scenes of fallen fruit lasting 30-40 seconds may be art but it is not my idea of a good movie. The acting is similar to that found in United States movies made 10 to 20 years earlier. " [More]

"This is a list for Round 2 of my movie year countdown viewing project as first described here. If by any strange chance whoever is reading this is actually following along you may notice that I'm still less than two thirds of the way through my original one. Well I'm starting this new one because as much as I love old movies it can get a little tedious watching just older movies. So I'm going to be blending my watching of the two lists together. Still focusing on the original one, but every once in a while sliding in the next entry from this new list.Again these new movies are limited to full length movies that are available on Netflix. And for this new round instead of picking a movie from every year, I will be picking a movie from every two years. For example the first movie must have come out during 2006 or 2007. The second movie must have come out in 2004 or 2005. The next in 2002 or 2003. You see.The list is not finished yet, but here is what I have decide ... " [More]
