  • Manipulative tripe

I am passionate about hating My Best Friend's Wedding. This is the worst movie I've seen, even beating out Eraserhead (at least it's experimental). I will not forgive a director who cares more about manipulating the audience than crafting a story.

In a nutshell, the Dermot Mulroney and Cameron Diaz characters are nothing more than plot devices; they are totally flat characters who act in completely inconsistent ways, simply to keep the audience guessing which woman will be selected.

If you cannot tell a story with consistent characters, you're telling the wrong story or using the wrong characters.

This could have been a decent movie if they'd cut down on the "suspense" of who the Dermot Mulroney character would marry and instead focused on unconventional relationships and defining family.

Rocco and His Brothers is one of my two favorite movies. Don't worry about the plot, just go see it; if you're a film buff, seeing a Luchino Visconti film is good for your soul anyway. It's still showing at special screenings and festivals around the world. As a matter of fact, it's showing in Toronto tonight (July 30, 2007 6:30 PM). I have yet to find the true uncut version (180 minutes run time) on DVD or video, so make every effort to see the 180-minute print on screen.

There are a lot of reviews and synopsis that go into detail about the movie and the politics of northern versus southern Italy. I actually prefer going into a movie knowing close to nothing about the movie. In this case, I think the plot summaries can scare people away from the movie.

What you need to know about Rocco and His Brothers is that the cinematography is gorgeous and that you will be absolutely wrenched into the world on the screen. I left the theater more in the reality that had been on the screen than in the mundane world where I got in the car (where music was unbearable) and drove home. It's the only movie where I have the feeling if I just think at the screen strongly enough, things will be different

I have never met anyone like Rocco and I don't believe such a person can exist. But I believe in Rocco. He is completely consistent and true to his character.

You might not love this film the way I do, but I believe most everyone will be caught up in their world and enjoy the visit.

    Le Cercle Rouge  (1970)

Until I watched Le Cercle Rouge, I didn't think about film language. I think most people take for granted their fluency in the director's shorthand. For example, if two people glance at each other in a crowded room, you expect that something is about to happen (someone throws a punch), they have a secret, or someone's lying. Like any other language, film language has changed over time.

The Red Circle is an enjoyable and slightly psychedelic caper movie. I'm not familiar with Italian cinema, but I thought that the movie did an excellent job of slowly building suspense in a unique way.

Luckily the moment that struck me, and majority of the several hundred others in the audience, as absurd was early enough it didn't damage the rising tension. The chuckle I couldn't hold back from the scene with old film language was one of the few things I felt dated the movie.

The movie does need you to invest a bit of effort. Because I was lucky enough to see the movie with a large and equally committed crowd in a theater, it was easy for me. The audience was the quietest I have ever been a member of. Hopefully the tension translates well for home viewing. Dedicate the time to watch without any interruption, don't get up for more refreshments, and turn off the phone.

Don't let that, finding the uncut version, or the subtitles put you off seeing this movie. I think it is one of the best heist movies, easily on par with Sexy Beast.

Se Tutte Le Donne Del Mondo  Production Year

A title like Kiss the Girls and Make Them Die hints that either you've wandered across a snuff film or that the movie is doesn't take itself too seriously.

Kiss ... and ... Die is in fact a firmly tongue-in-cheek, madcap spy movie. This movie has everything you need for uncomplicated escapism: beautiful people (including lovingly framed bouncing buttocks), gadgets, hidden lairs, and overly complicated plans for world domination.

If you enjoy Bond movies and Austin Powers, this is the perfect movie to show that not all foreign films are pretentious treatise examining the duality of existence. The more the merrier, watching with a group will only enhance the wonderful absurdity.
