Until I watched Le Cercle Rouge, I didn't think about film language. I think most people take for granted their fluency in the director's shorthand. For example, if two people glance at each other in a crowded room, you expect that something is about to happen (someone throws a punch), they have a secret, or someone's lying. Like any other language, film language has changed over time.
The Red Circle is an enjoyable and slightly psychedelic caper movie. I'm not familiar with Italian cinema, but I thought that the movie did an excellent job of slowly building suspense in a unique way.
Luckily the moment that struck me, and majority of the several hundred others in the audience, as absurd was early enough it didn't damage the rising tension. The chuckle I couldn't hold back from the scene with old film language was one of the few things I felt dated the movie.
The movie does need you to invest a bit of effort. Because I was lucky enough to see the movie with a large and equally committed crowd in a theater, it was easy for me. The audience was the quietest I have ever been a member of. Hopefully the tension translates well for home viewing. Dedicate the time to watch without any interruption, don't get up for more refreshments, and turn off the phone.
Don't let that, finding the uncut version, or the subtitles put you off seeing this movie. I think it is one of the best heist movies, easily on par with Sexy Beast.
