    Calling Cards  Production Year

i admit it - i'm a dog person! one of my favorite short films from the Telluride Film Festival this last summer  was "Useless Dog." it played in a program called Calling Cards and is a very charming short film from Ireland about a border collie named Guiness. anyway, i was excited to find this week that Useless Dog can be seen and downloaded free from AtomFilms (look under Films To Go).

    Reign Over Me  (2007)

i liked this movie more than i thought i would. i loved the opening shot that follows Charlie (Adam Sandler) on his scooter at night. the music throughout is also perfect. it's not a great movie and sometimes it's unbelievable but it's also interesting. people say and do things you don't expect. i believed these two were friends, or used to be. anyway, don't see it for Adam Sandler (who is pretty annoying throughout) but see it for Don Cheadle, who is amazing and funny. it's his story as much as Charlie's, as he has problems too and isn't very happy with his life. the scenes of him at work in his upscale dentist office were my favorite. after this movie i made a list:

    1. get some Chinese food.
    2. put new/better songs on my iPod.
    3. pull out the Mel Brooks movies.

    Mafioso  (1962)

this Italian movie from the 60s, in limited re-release i guess, is said to be one of the first movies ever to mention the "mafia." i'm really glad i got the chance to see it. it's the story of a man from Milan who takes a vacation with his family back to his hometown in Sicily, where he finds he really can't escape the whole Sicilian thing. it's sad and it's funny both. if you like classic foreign films this is a must-see!

    Starter for Ten  (2007)

i was really looking forward to this and i wasn't disappointed. it's a familiar romantic comedy/coming of age story but the acting and writing are above average and besides everything is better with a British accent! James McAvoy (Last King Of Scotland) was really good - hope to see him a lot in the future.

wow - fascinating movie - i loved it. i don't know how it holds your interest for so long when all they do is talk and talk about files, letters, etc., but it does and at the end you will want to know more! also one of the best all-around casts i've ever seen.
