    Shut Up & Sing  (2006)

this movie really got to me. i saw it a couple weeks ago and i'm still thinking about it. i'm a Chicks fan i guess as i have some of their CDs but when i first read about their "problems" i thought they probably shouldn't be so upset that their core fanbase was boycotting them after what they did (the lead singer said, on tour, how they were embarrassed the president was from Texas).

after watching this movie, though, i'm appalled at how stupid and how easily manipulated (by the media mostly) the American people can be. i think this has to be one of the most important documentaries i've seen. not only does it bring up issues of free speech and what being patriotic really means but it shows these women becoming stronger as they deal with adversity. they are completely different people at the end of the movie. also interesting is how they balance their careers and families and a behind-the-scenes look at how the music business works. highly recommended.

p.s. by the way, the all-movie guide description or whatever for this movie is not correct. i've seen them make mistakes but as of today this one is entirely another movie altogether!

    A Good Year  (2006)

OK, it's a romantic comedy and the "slapsticky" parts do not work but it's really not any worse than other movies of this type. in fact it might be some better because the scenery is beautiful, some of the dialogue is witty, and you get to watch Russell Crowe for almost two hours. i also liked the french actors a lot (the man who comes to analyze the vines almost steals the movie) and the story has kind of a loopy charm. sure it's predictable but most movies are now. did i mention it has Russell Crowe?
