i almost didn't go. no one wanted to go with me and the reviews i had read were not very enthusiastic but it was the very last night and i liked the book so i went anyway. good decision, since it was fun and very entertaining. i enjoyed the movie's style, the acting, and the music. some of the reviews said it was "strange and messy" but the author is telling his own strange and messy story. i went to one of his book signings and he seemed a lot more normal than his books would suggest! anyway, thumbs up for me.

what a sad day -- i know he was getting older but it seemed that he was pretty healthy for his age. didn't he receive some kind of award at the Oscars last year? anyway, i thought i'd list my favorite Altman movies since he's one of my very favorite directors. i heard he was thinking about making/remaking the Hands On A Hard Body story and i was also hoping for a Player sequel since i heard Michael Tolkin was writing another book but i guess it's not to be. in no particular order:

    1. McCabe & Mrs. Miller
    2. Short Cuts
    3. The Player
    4. M*A*S*H
    5. Nashville
    6. 3 Women
    7. Popeye
    8. Cookie's Fortune
    9. Gosford Park
    10. The Company

    Half Nelson  (2006)

this is one of those movies that you're still thinking about the next day. sometimes hard to watch. excellent actors and a story that doesn't provide easy answers. i think the ending is happy (or at least hopeful) but that is very much up to interpretation! a scene toward the end is one of the saddest and most intense that i've seen in ages. i definitely want to watch it again someday. i've heard oscar buzz about Ryan Gosling and i think he deserves a nomination at least.
