I'm a sucker for musical biopics, but this flick flew under my radar a few years back. Apparently I'm not the only one who forgot about it because it only made $8.5M worldwide. Beyond the Sea is the story (sort of) of Bobby Darin, nightclub guru. And news to me -- husband of Sandra Dee. John Goodman stars as... what else but the sloppy fat friend.
The music was very good throughout, but the style was a bit uneven. Are certain sequences dream sequences? Is the whole movie about a movie? What's real and what's reimagined? One of the repeated messages is that memories are what you make them -- they aren't 100% factual. So I realize Spacey assembled the flick with that in mind, but it still sometimes felt choppy. Spacey directed and I wonder how a more experienced director may have improved the movie.
Rent it.
