    Death Proof  (2007)

My expectations were through the roof, so I feel slighted that I didn't love Death Proof.  It's basically 2 car chases/crashes surrounded by 90 minutes of dialogue.  It's Tarantino, so the dialogue is mostly fun even for the 99 percent of the earth's population (that includes me) that will only pick up on obscure pop culture references when they're explicitly spoon fed.

Even though I didn't love it, I will recommend it to anyone who like any one of QT's other movies.  That includes all you lovers of Kill Bill who dis my beloved Jackie Brown!

    Premonition  (2007)

Remember the old saying from T2 that Sara Conner passed on to John?  This is a feature film all about it.  Even if events are altered, is the overall course of history pre-determined?  The premise probably looked great in a script, but Mennan Yapo couldn't get over the atmosphere hurdle.  For a drama like this, you need some distinct atmoshpere -- for example, some hints that the alternate realities are being explored.  Premonition wasn't a complete disaster, it just lacked the artistic umph to make it really likeable.

Rent it only if other flicks are out of stock at the woefully stocked Blockbuster.

    Clash by Night  (1952)

Another interesting choice by WB in their Noir Box volume 2.  I wonder if they re-watched it, or if someone at WB sorting titles saw Fritz Lang directed and Robert Ryan starred.  I'm not complaining - this is a great drama.  The message is even more compelling than many popular noir titles because the premise is not so over-the-top.  Sadly, the topic hits very close to home for most people either through personal experience or friends/family.

Paul Douglas plays the role of gentle bear.  Early on I feared he'd be 2-dimensional as the simple, kind man who proposes marriage (sort of) to Barbara Stanwyck's character.  But he fleshes out a bit.  Any noir fan will sense doom the moment Robert Ryan's character is introduced.  He might not be out to cause trouble, but you can sense trouble sticks to him.

Although he doesn't get as much screen time, my favorite character was by far Keith Andes.  Feminists will hate him, and I'm not saying I agree with his every thought -- but he plays a real man.  You won't see him swinging punches, shooting a criminal, or saving a damsel's life.  But he has a very clear sense of right and wrong.  When a man and woman marry, it's for keeps.  You don't try out a mate and pass them off when someone better comes along.  He's the rock throughout the movie.

Feel gooders like Oprah will roll their eyes at the fate of those in Clash By Night who choose to follow their impulses wherever it leads them.  It's not pretty -- but you know, that's reality.  Men and woman aren't made to try each other out for a lifetime.  It's an emotional burden that crushes even the strongest eventually.

  • X-FILES: 5.20

Season 5 is by far the weakest link of the X-Files so far.  Keep in mind, I'm only halfway through the DVDs, but 5 let me down.  The stand-alone episodes for the most part aren't very compelling, spooky, mysterious, ... [insert any other free association word w/X-Files].

I'm told that the feature length movie that bridges Seasons 5 and 6 will pump me up again.  Further, the production value increased substantially in 6 because budgets were suddenly larger and filming moved from Canada to the US.

But, the finale did serve its role of cliffhanger effectively.  A young boy may be the link between humans and aliens, Cig Man is back, the Syndicate wants the young boy, Kan't-Kill-Me Krycek is back, the Lone Gunmen help out... in short, I see the momentum picking up.

    Pretty in Pink  (1986)

I recently discovered that a John Hughes flick somehow soared under my radar -- Some Kind of Wonderful.  Ignoring the mountain of mediocre reviews, I watched it with wifey.  Umm... I want to love it, really I do.  It had a few fun scenes, but for the most part I just found myself wishing we were watching Pretty In Pink instead.

You know from the DVD blurb how the movie will end.  Too be fair, you know how many 80s dramas will end.  But it's the road to the end that makes some of these cheeseball films so enjoyable years later.  This one was a pretty boring ride.

    Crossfire  (1947)

I'm plowing through the 2nd Warner Bros noir box, and I agree with JimBell that this is not noir.  In fact, I agree with JB's overall comments too.

Something interesting from the short featurette was that budgets in those days were basically 80% for lighting, sets, etc. and 20% with the cast.  The director pulled his lighting expert aside and said he wanted to reverse the traditional budget and spend 80% with the cast.  I think that's why we see such strong performances (except the flat Robert Mitchum, who appears bored throughout) and poor cinematography.  Shadows weren't used expertly for effect, there just wasn't money to buy more bulbs!

One other thing from the featurette.  There was a comment that the director and producer didn't work together anymore after Crossfire because of their "involvement in the Communist witch hunt".  I don't know the specific history of these 2 individuals, but I hate how noir commentaries on recent DVD releases can't help but reinvent history.  So-and-so was blacklisted, and so-and-so was blacklisted.  WHERE'S THE PROOF ANY OF THESE CATS WERE BLACKLISTED?!  But I digress...  Crossfire is okay.
