Windbreaker!

  • curse of the poor marketing

I completely agree with a reviewer who said "this movie was mistakenly marketed as another flick from that guy who did Hero."  It's a great movie on its own -- it doesn't need Hero to advertise for it.  Other than that, I knew nothing about Curse of the Golden Flower going in.  Man, it's eye candy.  And it's definitely Asian cinema!  Don't pick this up thinking it's L.A. kung fu with Chinese looking dudes - it's a drama about a Chinese royal family.   A family that is dysfunctional to say the least.

It earn the R rating for violence in the final 30 minutes.  Hoo boy!

  • don't read the DVD case, just watch it

    Memento  (2000)

    Unknown  (2006)

And don't let the DVD menu play, either!  Just hit the farging play button.

I have no idea how Unknown ended up in my Blockbuster queue -- automatically generated recommendation, maybe.  It was very good.  Not "own it" very good, but "rent it" very good.  You'll see what I mean when the final credits roll.

Read on if you don't mind spoilerific thoughts...

What worked -->  The premise of some guys waking up in a locked warehouse, some tied up, all badly beat up, and all with memory loss was interesting.  Throw in some great actors who really got into it:  Jesus Caviezel, Cypher Pantoliano, Metrosexual Kinnear, and the dude who played Assistant Marconi Operator Harold Bride in Titanic.  Even great stories can be executed with the quality of a made-for-TNT quality, but these guys had me from the start.

What kept it from being great -->  Sort of like my feeling at the end of Illusionist.  I thoroughly enjoyed myself, but felt like I'd be fine if I never saw the movie again.  Don't let people tell you Unknown is as good as Memento -- it's not close.  Memento is a frickin onion.

Even though I won't buy it, I'll recommend it to everyone I know (except my wife). I loved the ending.  Ok, I'm off to go through my Steven Seagal archives.

  • Porch Monkey: I'm taking it back

    Clerks II  (2006)

The sequel should not have been longer than 90 minutes, but a few of the scenes are worth the rental.  By the way, Randall isn't alone in his quest.  I too have made a committment to take back the phrase Porch Monkey.

I wanted to love this B-movie, but something was missing -- the real Samuel L. Jackson.  His stunt double filled in for him and just doesn't know how to deliver the lines in true Sam The Man fashion.

The premise was ridiculous, yes.  But so was the premise of Kill Bill.  In hindsight I'm wondering if the lead actor in SoaP wasn't Billy Dee Williams in disguise.  Just... bland.
