    Sling Blade  (1996)

Ok, so I'm 10 years behind the curve, but I finally got around to seeing Sling Blade.  Amazing.  No wonder Billy Bob was the darling of Hollywood after this was released.  He managed to craft a story about a mentally retarded man that was interesting, touching, depressing, hopeful, tense, and light-hearted -- all inside 2 1/2 hours.  The running time looked long on the cover, but every single shot is deliberate.  I have no idea how much was cut for the final picture, but the final package was perfect.  Even the scenes that linger on something don't feel like they're lingering.

The comic relief moments are early and often, but not distracting.  John Ritter is laugh-out-loud funny for all the wrong reasons.  Not funny ha-ha, funny queer.  Doyle's porch band... priceless.

    I'd highly recommend this DVD.

    Scoop  (2006)

I haven't seen many Woody Allen films, but I'm pretty sure he's played the exact same person in everything I've seen him in.  He annoyed the crap out of me in Scoop.  He's just not that funny or fresh.  There is some wit to be found, but you've got to be paying attention -- and that's no easy task.

My real beef with the story was that there were only 2 possible outcomes, and neither one was going to be particularly entertaining.  Turns out I was wrong... sort of.  The final reveal was a twist of one of the 2 possibilities.  Meh.

    Skip this DVD.

    The Holiday  (2006)

From now on, I'm watching Cameron Diaz movies in full-screen.  I can't handle the widescreen close-ups of her smile.

I didn't think The Holiday was bad.  I've seen my fair share of chick flicks to satisfy my wife... this wasn't bad, but it was forgettable.  So many movies that try to fit into the romantic comedy genre plod along like reasonable entertainment until they jump the shark in some way or another.  An ordinary guy suddenly has time time and money to fly across the world in pursuit of his love.  Or two lovebirds suddenly don't have to live like the rest of us (getting up on time and reporting to a job), so they kill 8 consecutive days under a shady tree in Central Park.  You get my drift.

So maybe it was a stroke of genius that the writer removed the "jump the shark" threat by making all of the main characters quasi-celebrities.  An editor, a movie trailer producer, a film composer, and a newspaper writer.  I don't roll my eyes because I feel like I'm watching some sort of celebrity reality TV.

I've never been impressed with Diaz, and I wasn't here either.  For me, Jude Law didn't really show his chops until the 2nd half.  But Kate Winslet and Jack Black were very believable characters.

All this to say, if you're like me, rent it for your wife and score some [points].

    Rocky V  (1990)

    Grumpy Old Men  (1993)

    Karaoke  (1996)

    Rocky Balboa  (2006)

Removing the dreadful Rocky V from all conversations about this franchise, you know most of how Rocky Balboa will play out.  Rocky will be old and retired, then he'll be inspired to fight, then he'll have a killer training sequence hopping to a killer soundtrack, then he'll take a pounding in the ring.  And yet, this sequel still rules.  As a matter of fact, I have nothing new to offer.  Just this karaoke cover of The Fanfare.

    Ahem.

    Lost Highway  (1997)

Great soundtrack.  Naturally, I didn't find that out until I wasted my time on David Lynch's Lost Highway.  I get that Lynch went for style over substance, but NO substance?  That's just ripping off the viewer!  Thankfully, this came in the mail from Blockbuster so I like to think I paid nothing for the rental.

Although I disliked it, I do feel obligated to point out some of the noir fun:

    - Camera angles, shadows, nondescript rooms

    - Dry dialogue between Bill Pullman & his femme fatale

    - Creepy little man with the clown face who we think will have answers

    - Puzzling, gruesome murder

  • Ain't no tragedy - I shot him. He was my first customer.

    Unforgiven  (1992)

    The Wild Bunch  (1969)

    The Proposition  (2006)

"Ain't had no water since yesterday, Lord.  Gettin' a little thirsty. Just thought I'd mention it.  Amen."

That touching prayer comes in the early moments of the movie, but those early 20 mins or so were the only excellent minutes.  I'm a fan of all sorts of westerns.  Don't have to be bloody, intellectual, comedic, whatever.  They just have to be good.  Overall Cable Hogue is borderline -- I'm sitting on the fence, so I rate it neutral.

The story is simple:  Cable Hogue is left in the desert to die, finds water, and makes himself a rich man because of it.  The most potential in the story is the revenge theme.  What will Hogue do if he ever spots those dastardly devils again?  Slaughter them?  Make them beg for their lives and then slaughter them?  Or is he capable of forgiveness?  Unfortunately, the revenge issue was ignored at times and rushed at others, so by the end I felt a little ripped off.  The love story was solid.  No complaints there.

Final complaint... I feel like a loner for saying this, but I thought the weakest link in this flick was the directing!  Yes,I know this was Peckinpah.  And no, I'm not kidding.  The Wayne's World Extreme Close-Ups, the awkward slow motion, the sped up portions.  The result is a very dated 60s movie where actors dress up in western garb.  Doesn't have the authenticity of say The Wild Bunch, Unforgiven, or Once Upon A Time In The West

Rent it.  But if you're like me, and received the Sam Peckinpah Westerns Collection Box Set, be thankful you own The Wild Bunch.
