Shanghai Express is filled with the favorites themes of most Dietrich films: the strong woman; weaker men; love in the balence. In Shanghai Express, these come together perfectly. All of the men look down on Shanghai Lilly because of her profession, but once they are in the hands of a Chinese warlord, they all depend on her.
