This is a delayed comment, as I see you posted this a long time ago, but just FYI if you don't know much about David Cronenberg. He has always been interested in stranger, twisted sexuality, and in this film he wanted to make sex scenes between a married couple as "sexy" as possible. He wanted to bring this type of thing back into style. And the scene on the stairs is going back to some of his older B-movie themes of more violent, twisted, depraved sexuality, showing how much their relationship has changed since the onset of the film.
